Shrine Out Of Time 1.2 - One Day In Kakariko

Saturday, February 1, 2020 (comprised of semi-raw note editings from April 24 through April 28, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long)

Shrine Out Of Time 1.2 - One Day In Kakariko

Hackeysack.

I was feeling like a hackeysack. That much I remember.

I felt like I was being kicked from boot, to boot, to boot, when all I wanted was to finally be allowed to grind my face into the pavement and die already.

I made a choice then. That much I remember, too.

I chose to not record.... whatever it was. No. whatever they were. For there were many things. I remember.

Me! The journaling fiend?

I remember deciding I did not want to tote along that kind of negativity with me.

There are holes in my journal and I’ve been only slightly infuriated with myself ever since. Is oblivion not worse than mere remembered evil?

....

Well, I succeeded in my goal; I really haven’t toted whatever it was along with me.

I’ve forgotten.

....

I hate forgetting.

....

What glimpses can I recall? I didn’t like any of the horizons I could see at my job.... Had my computer’s graphics processing unit malfunctioned by this time? Had Adobe yet subsequently revoked my CS6 license after I fixed it? The update had put me on the Catalina operating system—iTunes couldn’t play on Catalina. No more music; not even that cleansing escape. Not even that cleansing escape. When did the security doors go up? I couldn’t even see the birds out the window anymore, now they were so pixelated by the new screens. Too many doors, too many locks, no easy going outside anymore. The one brother who always came to me for such ready and available music theory help would not now help me in my time of deepest and most desperate need with simple sound balancing, at which he was just as much or more a swift expert—I was on a time limit. Was anything else of mine broken or ruined by my visiting family at that time? How many times had that happened?

This is making me really depressed. Not good for trying to get myself to write, to log, to flesh all the rest of these notes out quickly before Tears of the Kingdom comes out.

I am trying.

[ --- ], I am trying so hard.

It felt like my whole world was shrinking.

There must be more. I know there’s more. Ugh. Maybe I was right. Maybe I should just honor the choice I made before.... however infuriating I find the results now....

Not like me....

Not like me at all.... to banish information from the Record....

Where was I?

I was in Hell.

But I could use this crack in time right now.... for a little more Breath of the Wild....

There had been buzzkill. But no more.

Doing the thing bloody properly, now....

All right. It was right after five in the morning.

I was going to go see what Cado and Dorian were all up ons about....

“New clothes! Cute outfits!” Lasli shouted at me as I strode up the thoroughfare once more. But I was far too focused to pay her any mind. Let’s see....

“Who did this?” said Cado.

“I can’t believe this,” Dorian murmured in kind.

I approached them....

Cado?

“Link. We were standing guard the whole time, and yet this awful thing still happened. How could we have let someone sneak right past us?”

Dorian....

“Someone snuck in and stole Lady Paya’s most prized possession...”

Lady Paya, was it?

Dorian continued, “I’m sure Lady Paya would feel a little more at ease if she saw Master Link’s face.”

....I supposed she was of a good and noble stock after all.

I climbed up the steps to see....

Actually—

I was still dressed in my sneaky clothes.

....

.... Lemme change....

....

Okay, Champion’s Tunic and some Amber Earrings. And Hylian Trousers. Very good.

Now....

I walked into Impa’s house just after 5:30 in the morning.

“This is awful...” Paya was crying on the dark wood floor.

Paya, what is it?

“Link...” she raised her face from her hands and looked at me. “I swear I only took my eyes off it for a second!”

I looked and Oh my.... The Orb is gone!

“What should I... What should I do?” Paya shivered.

My choices: “What’s wrong?” or “Keep your chin up.”

I’d say.... I’d just ask what’s wrong.

“The Sheikah heirloom...” Paya whimpered, “The heirloom has been stolen!” As the camera zoomed in to the now vacant cushion.

“And just when I had finally discovered the heirloom’s secret...” Paya went on.

Oh really! Now I am legitimately intrigued....

She broke down into tears.... still kneeling before the spot where the orb used to be....

Impa spoke up: ““The hero, as chosen by the Sheikah heriloom, will be gifted the blessing of antiquity.””

That was a lotta red text.

“Paya thinks “The hero, as chosen by the Sheikah heirloom” is you, so she stayed up all night researching the heirloom.”

The younger woman continued to cry into her palms as Impa went on, “She came to the conclusion that “the blessing of antiquity” refers to one of those ancient shrines. And that the heirloom is the key that opens the shrine. And just before we were able to tell you this, the thing is stolen!”

“I had been cleaning the heirloom regularly every day from morning to dusk,” Paya piped up.

Now that is devotion.

Oh, she is hiccoughing with sobs, the poor girl....

“Someone must have stolen it during the deepest hour of the night,” she went on.

And it wasn’t me, dang it.

“This place is off-limits to outsiders... And no one from the village would do such a thing! Would they?” she added disbelievingly.

The Stolen Heirloom quest banner gleamed across the screen. Shrine quest! Excellent.

Paya continued, “Someone with evil intent came into this sacred place. I’m glad Grandmother is safe, but I still feel so...violated.”

Oh poor Paya....

I.... I know how you feel, Paya.

I know.

.... I’m experiencing a slight shift of.... shift of....

....

Don’t worry, Paya.

She buried her face in her hands again.

And with a heavy sigh I had not heard before, Impa chimed in again, “Link... Paya is afraid that the thief may still be nearby. Would you please stay by her side today?”

Of course I would.

And I nodded.

Blackout.

The scene faded back in and Paya and I were in her upstairs room. It seemed.... mistier. A ghostly haze.

I supposed the day must have passed.

She sighed in an easier tone than she had downstairs earlier.

“Master Link... Thank you for staying by my side for the whole day.”

Of course, Paya. :)

“I see now that crying and feeling scared won’t help us get the heirloom back.”

Heh, they didn’t help me much with Guardians either. It’s okay.

“I checked with Dorian and Cado, but they said they didn’t see anyone other than villagers around,” Paya supplied, “I’ll try again to remember all I can about the night the heirloom was stolen, but the thief may still be hiding nearby.”

And then, “I have a bad feeling. If you spot any suspicious movement at night, don’t approach...”

Now that I can’t promise, Paya....

And the cutscene released me.

What time was it?

It was 7:05 pm.

Hm....

I’d spent the day with Paya.

Now night was falling....

....

Papa’s got some hunting to do....

Cado and Dorian only let known villagers in....

They said the only people who’d stopped by yesterday were Lasli and Mellie. Lasli from the clothing shop and Grandma Mellie from the plum garden. In blue font....

Cado said they usually came by during the day, but they’d recently started coming at night?

In my mind I had thought a Yiga, but....

A villager? Really?

Lasli? To whom I brought those fireflies?

....

Let’s go see....

I ran to Lasli before she could close up shop.

“We’re open every day! Prepare to be...Enchanted!”

“Nighttime activities?” I asked. The new dialogue option was certainly to the point!

“Excuse me?” Oh she had a wicked grimace on her pretty face now.... “It’s none of your business what I do at night!”

Goodness.

“Maybe think about finding a new pick-up line,” she growled!

And I could get nothing more from her.

....

What a turn from that pretty face among the fireflies’ glow.

....

I ran around.

Where was the plum garden? No, not that Grandma, that’s Nanna. From Lasli’s house.

Ran around some more, went a bit down the hill—there was an elderly person! I paraglided down....

She exclamation pointed just as I—no, just before I landed.

“Who’s there?!” she started at my approach. And then as she saw me clearly, “Hmph... Following a weak, old woman around like some kind of creepy delinquent!”

Really now.

....

Wait had I ever.... spoken to this woman before? Why don’t I remember your name as well as I remember those of the other villagers, Mellie? Mmm could be coincidence....

“Are you into older women or something?”

Are you a cougar?

“Well, there’s nothing wrong with that... but I’m married to a fightin’ man, I’ll have you know!”

And the dialogue ended.

I wasn’t interested in a married woman, Mellie.

....

Hmmm.

I wondered.... about the pedestal in the woods.... I could go check and see if anything had changed....

No but I’d just....

I’d just talk to Mellie once more first....

“I can tell you’re into older women,” she said, “but I’m married. Give it up.”

Okay, she really didn’t have anything else to say.

And Lasli?

....said the same thing she said last time.

But then nine o’clock struck, and she started to move. No longer the daily clappercaller.

“Any minute now,” I heard her mutter. Huh....

I spoke to her again. “What?” she said, or something like it. Then, under her breath, “Is this guy some kind of stalker? He’s a stalker! I’m being stalked! So this is what it’s like... I guess I’ll have to visit him later.”

Him? Who’s him?

She raised her voice to full volume again: “It... It sure is dangerous to be out alone at night, huh? Maybe I’ll just...head back to the shop.”

Why, if your shift is over?

Hmmm...

These two women were sneaking around at night!

I snuck up on Lasli again.

“Who’s there?” she jolted, “Is someone following me? If you’re following me, Jarod... I told you it’s over between us! So stop following me!”

Jarod?

Lasli then went back to the shop.... Going to start over I reckoned.... She’d been heading for the graveyard.... Maybe I’d follow her this time... Or precede her....

It was kind of like following that Korok.... back in the woods....

When Lasli finally came to a standstill in the graveyard, she seemed to be praying before a gravestone....

Huhhhh dare I interrupt her?

....

Yes.

“AHHHH!” she shrieked.

And then after a frozen second, “I guess I can’t keep it a secret any longer,” she moaned. “Not even Claree knows... This is...where the love of my life sleeps. No other guy has been able to stack up.”

Oh.

“He passed a long time ago, but I come here every now and then to be with him.”

My only response was.... “Where’s the heirloom?” Oh gosh....

“Heirloom? You mean that thing in Impa’s house?”

And again my only option: “Did you steal it?” So to the point! Too to the point!

“What?!” she asked, but her voice felt.... too coy.... “Why would I steal something like that? Are you... Are you following me because you think I’m a suspect?!”

I just.... nodded.  :|

“How awful of you...” she growled.

And that was.... it.

....

Yeah, that was pretty awful.

....

Hm. Maybe I’d go check out whatever Mellie was up to....

But.... one more try with Lasli....?

“This is where the love of my life sleeps. He got attacked by a monster and... He promised...he would always...protect me...”

That’s actually really sad.... and kind of makes me want to draw....

“So... Did you steal it?” or “Sorry for your loss...” My choices.

....

I would excuse myself.

“Sorry for your loss,” I said. I meant it.

“Thanks, I guess.” As her tone strikes like a viper.

I might be back later.

“But next time, try to be a little more sensitive to people you don’t know.”

Okay, maybe I won’t be back later.

“Everyone has their own issues to deal with.”

True, true....

All right. Now for Mellie.

“What is it you want?” she said when I approached her once again.

“Nighttime activities?” I asked.

“At night?” she blanched.

Yes, Mellie?

“So he knows...” she muttered under her breath, “I didn’t think anyone had seen me.”

Then aloud again, “Nighttime, huh? Well, I sleep at night. In my house. On a bed. That’s about it.”

Ah-huh....

Hm, she had nothing else to say after that.

She’d been standing by the plums and had turned right before I reached her.... Maybe.... she had something more to say, but.... now that she was in transit back to her house again I assumed....

....

Maybe I’ll just go check out the woods....

Wait, no, Mellie had gone back to the plums. What was she on about?

I approached her again.

“So you’re still here...” she said, “There’s only one reason to follow around an old woman in the wee hours of the night...”

And then “HELP! I’M BEING ROBBED!”

Wait, no that’s not—

“Or maybe you’re just bored. Either way, I’m sick of looking at your mug.”

....

Lasli’s story was better.

Under her breath again, “The sun will be up before I know it. Must hurry...”

What was she doing creeping around at this hour?

I wanted to follow her....

But she wasn’t moving....

....

All right. To the woods then.

Oh. There was someone up here by the shrine. It was a Sheikah.

....And I didn’t know his name.

I readied for trouble, but then saw as I drew closer that oh, no, it was just Olkin. That was okay. All right.

Wait what was Olkin doing up here?

I approached him.

“Oh, have you come up here to look at the castle too? I know the light swirling around it is a manifestation of pure evil, but... it’s kind of beautiful.”

This.... adoration for the unholy put me on edge again. This was Olkin.... right? Olkin was a good guy.... right?

He continued, “Although I’m surprised to see so many people up here tonight. I just saw Dorian run off to the hills back there.”

WHAT.

Stay here, Olkin.

“He seemed like he was in a hurry, so I didn’t get a chance to speak with him.”

I was in a hurry now.

I dashed down the path into the woods.... up the hill to the right....

It was after midnight and kind of windy....

Toward the bridge....

It was past two in fact....

!!

Dorian was at the pedestal!

*gasp!* D8

“I know you’re there! Show yourself!” he growled, drawing his blade....

And—*gasp!* A... a big Yiga Man appeared on the pedestal, with his booming, scoffing laugh! Holding his WindCleaver ready.... “You don’t have to shout. I’m right here.”

Oh no was Dorian.... Wasn’t he the one whose wife....?

“So you’re the ones who stole the heirloom!” Dorian said.

What? How did he know?

“Heh... Such anger,” the Yiga scoffed. “It seems this thing is truly special to the fools of this village.”

Dorian....

“Why would you steal it?” Dorian growled again. The Sheikah was so set and ready, but....

“Don’t play dumb, Dorian.”

He knows his name?

“You knew what you were getting yourself into when you decided to leave the organization.”

*gasp*! What? D8

“You forfeited your life the moment you left.”

Oh my gosh....

Dorian....!

“Hnng...” Dorian grunted....

“You did well to tell us about the heirloom,” the Yigaman continued, “Unfortunately, your usefulness has come to an end, as must you. But first...”

The camera turned.... and that dripping Piano....

“It appears we have an audience!”

Oh, he could see me all right.

I stood boldly in the moonlight.

“FOR MY FALLEN MASTER!” he shouted, and came at me—

Oh boy.... Not on your life, pal....

The Master Sword ran out of juice, but I used an Ice Rod to freeze him.... and then finished him with a ThunderBlade....

And he was gone. Done for.

There were no more of them.

It was all right, Dorian.

Black out and back in....

Dorian and I stood in the clearing. The Heirloom on the ground between us.

“I can’t believe I was being followed,” he said.

Good thing for you that you were.

“I’m sure you’ve figured it out, but all of this is my fault... There’s no point in trying to hide it. I am...a member of the Yiga Clan. Or I used to be, anyway.” He grunted as he said it. It was painful for him to say out loud I could tell.

“But then I met the most incredible woman who blessed me with two amazing children.”

It was you.

“And so I tried to change my ways. Tried to leave the clan. But the Yiga... They took my wife’s life as punishment.”

No....

“I couldn’t let them hurt my children, so I used my position as gatekeeper to gather information for the Yiga.”

Dorian....

“I told them about you and about the village in exchange for safety.”

.... It’s a good thing I’m as strong as I am, Dorian.

“But my grief over losing my wife consumed me, and I finally decided to cut ties with the Yiga completely!” His face was set. “I decided I could protect my children from the Yiga. I wasn’t afraid of them. But the Yiga are pure evil.” He was trembling now, fists clenched. “They told me they would kill both Impa and Paya if I didn’t play along!” The quiet orange radiance of the orb lit up his face like a fire.

“Paya figured out that this heirloom is the key to opening an ancient shrine. We weren’t able to make it work, but Paya thinks that maybe you can. Paya...and all of us are devoted to helping you in your quest.”

Oh Dorian....

“Now, please restore this heirloom to its pedestal.”

....

And I did. Finally, finally able at very long last to lay hands on the thing.... just to walk it a few paces, and set it down in the pedestal’s depression.

....

And up came the shrine....

Dorian jumped back!

“The shrine!” he gasped! “So the heirloom WAS the key to opening the shrine. Incredible...”

His eyes were softer now.

“Master Link, I...”

He looked down and away.

“I’m very sorry for all of this.”

....

“I know it’s a selfish request, but do you think you could keep what really happened a secret?”

Dorian.... Of course I can. :)

“I truly don’t deserve mercy, but I don’t want my children, Koko and Cottla, to suffer anymore.”

I don’t want them to either, Dorian.

“I know it doesn’t make up for what I’ve done, but I pledge to protect the village and my family from now on.”

His eyes were raised once more.

“No matter the cost.”

It matters to me. Just you protect your family, Dorian. You’re a good man.

Fade out....

The Stolen Heirloom – Complete

The Lokna Rokee Shrine.

I knew it.

~

Dorian was gone.

I went to see to the shrine....

Ah, and that activation sound was even brighter and stronger than I remembered it....

Lokna Rokee’s Blessing.

And when I came out....

The sun was rising.

I paraglided down into the village.... “Dorian?” as I sailed toward Impa’s house. But only Cado populated. “Cado....”

I about-faced and paraglided back a little bit, touched down, ran up the trail... into the house....

Dorian sat on a stool, bent in half sleep maybe, watching over his children as they slumbered....

“Master Link... I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, so it’s been difficult to sleep well. Same for you, I imagine? Well, in any case, you should get some rest at the inn when you’re tired.”

Will do, buddy. :) Take it easy.

Link’s got your back.

~

My dryer stopped back in the woods. I needed to empty it....

~

.... Now a little over 24 [game-] hours later.... back to talk to Paya....

“Oh Master Link....” She sniffed, her poor shoulders drooping.

“Because I wasn’t there...the heirloom... Our precious Sheikah heirloom...”

My only response.... “Actually...” And I gesticulated....

“What?!” Paya said, straightening a bit. “Oh... So that means the heirloom... has finally fulfilled its purpose.”

I nodded. :)

“Thank goodness!” she sighed.

Her eyes softened.

“It doesn’t matter how it happened, so long as the object we have guarded preciously for generations... So long as it was able to help you out in some way, I couldn’t be happier!”

Aw, and she was smiling her cute smile. :) She is actually quite a pretty girl.

“I pray that the protection of the gods of old follows you wherever you go...”

Thank you, Paya.

The scene faded out and back in.

Nothing had changed. Paya still stood near the now vacant platform. Impa still sat on her tower of cushions.

And when I turned to Paya again, she told me to take care. <3

Everything was back to normal. :)

Except....

I noticed later, as I looked in my inventories....

My items....

Ugh....

My deepest pantry pocket where I keep all my fruits and vegetables and bugs and monster bits and bobs and firewood....

Augh—

It’s all been.... rearranged!

ಥ⩍ಥ

Now the strange and exotic Hearty Durians were first, instead of the pure and basic Apples.... Nutritional value and effectiveness notwithstanding, it just looked so.... so wrong!

8C

It must have happened in the woods, when I groped for something to eat during the fight against the Yiga....

....

But I was far too many saves ahead now.... to change it. And reliving certain things would....

....

Cutscenes viewed often lose their charm.

....

Dang it.

. . . . . . .

I guess.... that’s one way to get over OCD.

Poop.

Shrine Out Of Time 1 - Relent

Evening of Monday, December 30, 2019

Shrine Out Of Time 1 - Relent

Something happened.

I was at Impa’s. Just.... staking the place out. In my Sneaky Suit to boot. But the old lady’s sleepless eyes, even deceptively closed, could not be evaded.

When I asked Paya about the ball, she gave responses with red text.... that meant something important. It mentioned the Hero chosen by the Heirloom or some such words.... The only other place I had seen such verbiage was the little book near the door of Impa’s house—the Journal of Various Worries or something like it.

This journal seemed to have entries from the people about town. Like the cucco guy.

I went outside to see if I could gather all the cuccos again, a la Anju’s brood in OoT’s Kakariko Village. It would be a headache, I thought.... they were in such odd corners of the town.... But I went at it anyway.

Except.... after I tossed one in, and then went looking for another.... I came back and saw that the first one I had grabbed.... had repopulated to its original place beside the woodfire by the thoroughfare. The coop had likewise reverted to containing only three cuccos.

Huh.

I tried another cucco, and upon gaining a sufficient distance.... the same thing happened again.

So I guessed the cucco game was over and done with for good.

Even so, I stalked the village, waiting for the day to turn, waiting for the cucco guy and his wife to show up back home.... Or at least the cucco guy; the Worry Journal said he’d chosen the cuccos over her.

But I became impatient. Only Cado and Dorian pattered up the street, Koko and Cottla running around....

I went back to the Journal. Most of the entries mentioned issues that I seemed to recall already dealing with. There was one, though, the shop girl. Barking customers into the store all day. The Journal said she used to find solace after her work days by walking among the fireflies. Except now, she and the other villagers were being advised not to go wandering about, especially after dark. She didn’t know how she was going to deal....

I didn’t think I’d seen to her yet.

So off I went to the shop. I didn’t even remember what shop it was. Was it the general store? It was the only one with a clappercaller anyway. My but she did have such a pretty face for it. Nice smile.

Lasli was her name.

She beamed and hollered at me about the wares inside, and.... I just stood.

I waited there for [game-] hours.

Until finally, as night fell, around eight or nine, she turned and high-tailed it up the street.

I followed her. At my usual jog.

But the problem with being the athletic Hero whose globetrottings put arctic terns to shame was that.... well my metabolism ran just a little bit HOT. I ran faster than everybody else.

Maybe it was that hundred-year nap. I did certainly find myself walking feverishly jittered circles around my house all night after a bout of sucking morphine at the hospital that one time. But that’s another story (it was a kidney stone).

At any rate, as I followed Lasli up the slope, trying to anticipate her turns as she wound between the fields and fences, I kept accidentally running into the poor girl. I’m sorry!

So I slowed down, kept my distance, and at length I finally found the house she was heading for, nestled deep back up against a high nook of the village. Nanna’s House! I had discovered in my mad village stakeouts. I’d been wondering where Nanna had gone.... Her foot had long since seemed to have mended at least.... Was Lasli her granddaughter?

I followed her in.

Nanna was sleeping on a bed in the far left corner.

But Lasli walked in a few paces, turned, sat down on a stool, and her hat disappeared.

Huh.

She looked at me.

So I spoke to her, and she told me much the same thing I had read in the Worry Journal. Work was tiring, and if she could only just find her peace again among the beautiful fireflies at night....

As her lamentations petered out, the sidequest banner flashed across my screen: Something About Fireflies....

I barely registered the new red exclamation mark beside her before I spoke to her again.

“What? That glow!” or some such words. She could see the gleam of my collection of fireflies all the way at the bottom of my hammerspace pockets.

She begged me to show them to her.

Into the pause menu I went. I grabbed one, unpaused—

....Just one? Was I really that stingy? What was I gonna do with all these fireflies anyway?

—went back into the menu, and loaded up my arms with fireflies!

I could only carry five. But it was enough.

It was the world....

I released them right into the house, my HUD fled the event, and it was just Lasli’s bright smiling face taking in that beautiful green glow.... Oh how happy she looked....

She was so overjoyed, and the bright little insects floated so serenely around the room, not darting away like they did when I brushed by them in the wild.

Lasli didn’t have much, but she told me to please take the fifty rupees she offered, and I did.

It was true, it wasn’t so much. But it was something. But I didn’t need it.

Just seeing her joyous smile was enough.

“I wish Claree could see a picture of this!” she said, or something like it. Claree, I’d heard that name before. I think it was the shopkeep.... “They’re so pretty!” Lasli went on, beaming about the enchanting room.

“You’re pretty too,” I said.

Oh that was so cute! XD <3 ^_^

Because there was no way in all the pits of Ganon’s VoidRealm that I was was going to choose the other response, “They won’t live long.” Ugh!

Lasli only smiled and smiled at the sailing green stars in her room.

I did take a picture.

The night was waning when I walked back down the thoroughfare toward Impa’s house. I could see Cado and Dorian straight ahead.

They seemed to be.... reacting to something?

Oh my gosh.

I ran.

“Who could have done this?” they kept gasping to one another, and other such takings-aback. “Who could have stolen it?”

This was it.

Ah, I see. So it’s like Riju and the Thunder Helm. I had to clean up all the rest, first.

I rushed into the house.

Paya was a wreck, nigh on weeping on the floor before where the ball had—

The ball was gone.

Impa commanded my attention. But I don’t remember the words she said, just.... apprisings, information....

But Paya, “I only looked away for a moment!” or something like it. She was so distraught—

Impa said, “Paya believes that the thief may still be nearby. Would you mind staying with her for the rest of the day?”

Of course I nodded....

Would all this frigging buzzkill knock it off?

Corruption and Innocence

Waking of Monday, June 17, 2019 (comprised of raw note editings from April 5, 2023 through April 19, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long)

Corruption and Innocence

I sailed down into Kakariko’s thoroughfare to talk with Pikango.

But he had nothing new to say.

I derped around the village.

But nothing had changed.

So....

I....

....went to the interwebs, and asked for a hint.

In the meanwhile I went and killed a couple of Lynels, upgraded some clothes, got another piece of Naydra—I’d been out of hornshard just there—rode my Big Horse around, toyed with looking at different mane-color possibilities on some other horses.... but could never follow through.

When I checked my preferred interwebs channel again, I’d not yet received any help.

Probably just as well.... It was a moment of weakness—I should never have queried there in the first place....

....

I was getting sleepy while I played again.... ugh....

I just.... put the game to bed for the time being.

....

Mmmrmrrmhrmmm consulted.... YouTube?

Why was I flouting such danger?

I made a search and then, just.... just looked at the thumbnails. I wouldn’t watch anything.

....

That shrine was called Lokna Rokee.

One thumbnail had.... a Yiga?

“The Stolen Heirloom”?

So the Yiga were involved....

Maybe I could go on that for now....

This was so cheating....

Ugh, I wanted the last two shrines and I wanted to beat this game....

....

I turned the game back on.

....

Swept the Yiga Hideout. Nothing.

Warped to the Plateau Tower and sailed down to the Shrine of Resurrection.... Why? ....But there was nothing there either.

Traveled from the Dueling Peaks Stable to Kakariko on foot, and fought the first Yiga I saw along the way. Nothing.

....

I wandered up the hill and between the tall stone cliffs and into the village, and.... played with Cottla. First it was a race, then hide-and-seek....

Heh, I remembered. This hide-and-seek game had given me some pretty fitful dreams, a long, long time ago.... the first time I’d played it.

And now after so very, very long, I poked around the village once again, waking up old nightmares I’d forgotten, the terrifying numberlessness of the crevices behind the houses....

And again I couldn’t find Cottla. Not right away at least.

I dipped into Impa’s house for a breath.

Impa and Paya had nothing new to say to me either.

....

Time stood so weary and heavy on my back.

The end was near and I could feel it.

....

I went back outside.

Looked around.

....

Where could I go? Who could I talk to?

....

That patio.... reminded me of.... social types who sit around and talk....

I walked over.

Oh. Koko was there. Cottla’s sister. Using the wok.

Dorian had said Koko was now sort of like a mother to Cottla, ever since their real mother, his wife, had been killed by the Yiga clan.

Koko was cooking again, and.... a red exclamation mark? An undone task? What? But.... I had already cooked with Koko. I distinctly remembered the name of that long ago bygone quest: Koko’s Kitchen. How could I not? It sounded just like Koko’s Kitten.... And I had completed it.

Oh and Cottla was hiding back there! Down in the grass over the far side of the patio! Crouched down in the crack between house and terrace. Gosh she was tiny.

I went over to her and found her—and she delightedly conceded I’d won, and gave me an Amber.

Darling child.

....

But about this new red exclamation point marker on Koko....

“What should Koko make now...” she wondered aloud when I approached her. And then with a jump and a little cheer she decided on a hot buttered apple. “Mother used to make it all the time!”

The ingredients were apple and goat butter, but.... Koko sighed and said she was all out of goat butter.

She lamented that she was a bad daughter who couldn’t do anything right....

Oh dear one....

The positive option I was given to respond with was righteously charming:

“Voilà! Goat butter!”

I fwipped it out of my pockets and handed it over like a Hero.

“Is this... goat butter?!” she perked with a little hop, and her eyes lit up again.

She thanked me and told me to wait just a second—and the screen blacked out while the cooking sound played....

When the world came back, Koko had produced the Hot Buttered Apple. She reveled in the yummy smell and sang praises to its sweet taste before telling me to take some for myself, which I did.

It was a cute little 2-heart dish. :)

“Koko will work hard to get better and better at cooking!” she said. And then—

Cooking with Koko – Complete

Cooking with Koko....?

Not Koko’s Kitchen....

Huh. Were there.... hidden quests?

Why hadn’t I seen that red exclamation mark before? Had I just never been close enough?

Speaking of which.... she didn’t have one now. Maybe I had to—

I left the area, and then came back.

Koko again had a red exclamation mark.

Huh.

When I spoke to her again it was the same story—

“Hmm, what should Koko make now... OH!! Koko will make Father’s favorite! Tough meat-stuffed pumpkin! It’s great for an energy boost.”

—except this time it was called Koko Cuisine.

The ingredients were fortified pumpkin and raw meat, but she was out of raw meat.

And then again, “Koko is a bad daughter who can’t do anything right. Koko will never be like Mother...” She wilted into a sulk.

Child!

“Voilà! Raw meat!”

And at this she lifted her eyes and perked up once more. “Are you sure about this? Really? Thank you so much! Koko means it! Stay right there for a second!”

And a black screen full of cooking noises later....

“Mmm! What a scrumptious smell! Oh, and that savory meat pairs SO well with the sweetness of the pumpkin! This is just how Mother made it! Here, have some! It’s so good!”

And I received some Tough Meat-Stuffed Pumpkin. This one was three hearts and it granted a little defense boost for a time, heh. :)

Koko again asserted that she was going to keep getting better and better, and then.... the Koko Cuisine quest was completed.

....

I went away and came back again.

And again Koko had the mark.

Koko’s Specialty was the quest this time.

“What should Koko make for dessert? OH! Koko will cook a honeyed apple! Mother loved those! It melts in your mouth and is sooo delicious!”

The ingredients: apple.... and courser bee honey.

But “OH, NO!!” Koko wailed. For she was all out of courser bee honey and it was too dangerous for her to go get more. The bees—they attack you when you get too close to their hives.

“Koko wanted to make some for Mother in heaven... But...Koko is a bad daughter who can’t do anything right.”

MY

HEART,

DEAR LITTLE ONE.

“Voilà! Honey!”

I was gonna cry.

Again Koko thanked me a lot, and again she cooked the dish, and again she remembered all about it, but.... her response and reminiscence this time was somewhat more subdued, and.... she wept tears.

“This... This is...” Her eyes fell again. “Koko...remembers... When Koko had a fever, Mother would always cook this just for Koko. When Mother made her special dessert, she always put some of this in it.”

And then a little howl escaped her as her hands came to her face and she cast her sorrow out to the skies—“Waaah! Mother!!”

Oh Child, oh Sweet, Sweet Child....

“Koko...” She wiped her eyes. “Koko...will do her best and try to be as good as you one day! Koko will get better and better! Koko promises!”

And slowly the smile came back to her face as she looked at me again.

“Koko was able to re-create Mother’s dishes! Koko...feels better now!”

And she thanked me with the final dish—Energizing Honeyed Apple. Five hearts and about 135° of extra stamina.

Koko had no more exclamation marks hovering over her after that.

That was good.

Be at ease, Little Friend.

Hm.

Maybe it took fulfilling every last quest in Kakariko first....

Like in Gerudo Town....

Oigh, when can I get that orb....

But.... tonight....

Tonight was quite sweet. <3

Journal Of Two Very Specific Worries In Particular

Waking of Friday, June 14, 2019 (comprised of raw note editings from April 5, 2023 through April 17, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long)

Journal Of Two Very Specific Worries In Particular

As I had already gotten it, and was subsequently unafraid of spoilers, I went looking around YouTube for clues regarding the Toto Sah Shrine below Misko’s Cache. I wanted to know whether it would still audibly ping the Sheikah Slate’s sensor while the rocks were still blocking it.

I mean I didn’t see why it wouldn’t.... after all, that Thing Under The Mountain shrine in Akkala had still brreep-brreeped at me.... But I was paranoid....

I found a video about the Necludic shrines. Inadvertently saw the shrine name Lokna Rokee.

Lokna Rokee? .... I didn’t recognize that name. Was that Impa’s Shrine?

But if it was listed here, on this video, then....

Did that mean it wasn’t the last shrine you got?

Did that mean you could get it at any time?

I’d just imagined the final shrine to be.... hidden until you were upon the time of finding it, and then somehow scripted. I’d imagined that.... it must have been a combat shrine. A combat shrine unlike any other.... My mind was pulled away once again to that hole in the pattern beneath the Eldin Great Skeleton. That blasted thumbnail I had seen.... and which STILL cropped up sometimes.... It looked so like the Deplian Badlands....

Hmmmm....

....

I was going to see if I could steal the old lady’s orb and finally put it in its pedestal.

....

I have just had a scary time booting up my console.

When I power it down, I will watch the orange light.

....

Okay, I was in Hateno.

....

It felt.... off, with David and Savannah here just giggling at memes.

I was still in my Gerudo harem-pant pajamas.

I am going to go to Kakariko Village. That’s where I’m going.

But first, it was a brief visit to Fyson in Tarrey Town, for arrows. Then Botrick for arrows again. But oh, Botrick was still sold out. .... Hm, that meant Gerudo Town probably would be too, then.

It was enough.

I warped to Kakariko.

I wanted that ORB....

Walking straight up to it and attempting to grab it didn’t work.

I couldn’t talk either Impa or Paya into giving it to me.

The floor—

These Kakariko houses....

I took careful regard of the exact position of the orb and then.... went outside. The actual ground around Impa’s house was sparser than most, as the structure was nestled in the midst of the waterfall. But in short order I was able to find a foothold big enough to grant me access to the crawlspace under the house. I crouched down, threading my way between the thick support beams.... The orb should have been right about.... there?

I considered the shape of the house, could imagine the steps from the doorway to where Impa sat, envisioned the orb just to the left there.

But the boards under the house all looked the same; nothing hinted at any kind of structural weakness.

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I toggled over to the cubic Bombs in my Slate.

Besides, why would they even have this crawlspace if not for something like this?

I planted the explosive right about where I thought the orb should be, four feet above on its little platform.

“This is your plan?” said David.

I backed up to a safe distance and hit the button, and Ja Baij’s party favor blew out with an electrical sizzling bang in a wide blue radius. I was pretty sure I heard some exclamations of shock from up through the floorboards—

But as the lingering haze cleared away and I moved back in.... I could see that the boards remained undamaged.

Guessed I wasn’t gonna get it that way.

I tried talking to Paya some more. I tried every species of being sneaky and avoiding detection to get close and just take it.... but it never worked.

I found that I could Stasis the thing. But my sword wouldn’t move it.

So I tried planting another Bomb under the house, then Stasising the orb, then blowing the Bomb....

No effect.

....

I was sure scaring these two poor ladies, though.

I tried talking to all the people I could; maybe someone had some information I was lacking. I tried taking pictographs of both the pedestal and the ball; maybe Impa or Paya could add two and two together with a visual aid—

That THUMBNAIL I saw....

The last shrine MUST be at the Eldin Great Skeleton....

These must be the last two shrines.

But how do I get them?

I warped to the Volcano.

Killed some monsters.

Wandered around....

Back at the Great Skeleton I tried the Meteor Rod in the eye socket this time. The fiery globules bounced around insanely for a while like pinballs before burning themselves out.

But.... nothing.

I did get two pieces of Dinraal in the meantime, though.

I’d thought for sure this place looked like that thumbnail.... the wan glare of the grass and the earth, the land falling away in the background, with only the chasm and the distant northlands beyond....

How do I get those shrines....?

Back to Kakariko.

Impa as it turned out was not frightened in the least by my Dark Series outfit.

Nor was Paya.

But Cado was—he drew his blade!

Good old Cado....

How do I get those bloody shrines....

....

There was a book in Impa’s house: the Journal of Various Worries.

Huh.

One of the entries mentioned Pikango, I think, and that he sought the fairy fountain. But that that was “near where the village’s guardian spirit resides”? Or some such words?

I thought the spirit was Cotera....?

And then this was followed by the line “We must not allow the newcomer [Pikango] to know the location of the fountain! Or of the two shrines nearby.”

Two shrines!

I KNEW IT.

I ran outside, but.... no Pikango. Checked the woods, but he wasn’t there either. At least, not around the pedestal of the undiscovered shrine.

Could Pikango tell me something useful the next time he appeared in the village?

Hmm.

I paraglided back down into the village proper, and headed back to Impa’s. Were there any other books around that I hadn’t read yet?

Nothing else of any great import in the main entry hall that I could see.

But maybe....

I padded up the unobtrusive wooden staircase behind where Impa sat, and—

Ah-ha! Paya had a journal!

....

But.... she was there, in the room, in the way of me reading it—my gosh I am nosy.

Well I suppose it was her bedroom after all.

See Paya had been the one to write the very last entry in the Journal of Worries. Something about the heirloom.... that ball....

When can I have it....

I am so tired. I might just go to bed.

Oops I stayed up and watched three more episodes of Parasyte instead.

What am I doing my cough isn’t even fully gone away yet....

2:16 am.

GOOD NIGHT, NEVERLAAAAAND!

*whump*

Distraction

Waking of Saturday, November 25, 2017 ~ 2

Time washed ugly hours over me as I watched the ink dry on the unending archives of my magpie brain. No blasted Delete key....

I wish.... I could be forgetful like some people.

I don’t like buzzkill.
Is it wrong of me to so want to honor the cinematic experience?
It was made to be seen and heard. And felt, depending on your rumble settings.
First impressions.... shouldn’t be cheapened.
And for some things.... every impression is important. Every meeting must be respected.

Am I wrong?

I did not save. I reloaded from before I had even spoken to the returned Oily Adventurers, and when I spoke to them this time, I took note of their words, so that I would have them for when I would have composed the previous entry.
Are you confused yet?
I took out Thrice and rode him hard all the way to the Outskirt Stable, and boarded him there.
Then I climbed up the back side of the Coliseum.
I just wanted to run away, be about something, plunge headlong into anything. And there was a Lynel in there.
Handy that the Coliseum was built up against the side of a great, jutting mountain, spiking into the air like Weaver’s Needle. From its top I could peer down inside the structure. But I couldn’t quite see the bottom....
I crept down closer and got on top of the ancient wall.
More than the Lynel met my gaze—there were ringing walkways, each level populated by a different kind of beast.
The Moblins were highest and nearest, then Lizalfos, and then Bokoblins down near the Lynel, who prowled the main floor. Three of each.
I had to clear part of the Moblins’ level for Bomb Golf to be any good. The bombs—they disappear if they roll or fall too far away.
But bombs were far too slow against this Lynel. I think it was a blue one. Very powerful.
Did I venture down into the Lizalfos level?
How close did I get before I reached the optimum range for archery....?
I used almost all my specialty arrows to kill the Lynel, and then cleaned out the rest of the Coliseum. This yielded plenty of monster bits, but only a couple of minor chests.
The Lynel gave an excellent bow, though.

The Lynel....
When I saw it give off that sudden flash as I was pelting it.... I ducked back, fearful of incoming Shock Arrows.
But it wasn’t firing at me.
It was doing something else.
I caught a glimpse of it later, as I struck it again.

It teleported.
A short distance away.

I didn’t know Lynels could do that.

Afterward I went outside to talk to Dai about what I’d done, but he cowered as he ever did behind that big chunk of stone.
As long as the Coliseum was clear, I took the opportunity to chase up what Koroks I could in the area. A bit tricky in the rain.
After this it was a venture into the field and another saving of Mils and Mina and from there.... I looked at my map.
There was another Korok circle I hadn’t noticed before, on Satori Mountain.
And so to Satori Mountain I went, and chased up Koroks and gathered various plants and captured bugs and things.... It was all in a little glen there, on that mountain, that I had not been in before. Cool, and shaded, and quiet, and peaceful. With the laughing of the water so soft and lovely. It was very relaxing.
Except perhaps for the occasional Octorok, but I dealt with them easily enough.
As I ventured farther and farther from the Glen of Quietude in my quest for plants and critters, I came upon the Satori Mountain Stalnox, as they are called. Rather the opposite of calm and peaceful, but I was feeling refreshed, and wanted a go.
My Compendium said if I could destroy its eye I could defeat it.
The Stalnox’s tack was quite unexpected however: as soon as it caught on to my presence and intentions, it retreated down the mountain. Right down the steep path on the western slope, toward the baobabs far below.
I tailed it, but did not want to get too close, or too low—fighting on uneven ground might take unexpected tolls on my stamina.
And so I simply remained on the shelf where I was. There were a few large boulders nearby, obviously meant to be rolled down the hill. My aim was terrible, though, and the Stalnox got away.
Where was it going?
Did the music fade away?
I don’t remember.
But I did not have to wonder long. Presently the Stalnox started lumbering back up the same path again. Maybe I could get a shot at its eye as it neared....
Its gaze stayed fixed upon me as it came closer and closer.... and when it was in a decent range, I fired.
Khing! Direct hit to the eye!
And his slow recovery cycle allowed me to keep him pinned!
Khing! Khing! Khing! Down went his health meter.
But when it reached about the halfway point, THE STALNOX RATHER FELL ALL TO PIECES AND HIS EYEBALL POPPED OUT AND DISAPPEARED BELOW THE ROCK I WAS STANDING ON. Oh shoot, was it going to roll away before I could kill it? I jumped forward to chase it—the collapsing bones MURDERED the framerate in cold blood—I came free and caught sight of the eyeball just exploding in a puff of evil.... and.... the thing was dead.
Monster bits spilled down the slope in a small avalanche. That was unexpected....
I guess.... somehow that did it!

After a while I finally sailed back down to Sanadin Park and thence to the Outskirt Stable, and did some business with the bespectacled Botrick—bought every last one of his arrows, and sold him what I could sell him.
And I chased more Koroks.
There were plenty of water-goal Koroks I hadn’t been able or willing to reach before, but I wanted one of them now—that one near Manhala Bridge.
I went upstream and fetched the boat from those flooded ruins with the near-sighted Lizalfos, and sailed it down the river....
It’s easy to put a rock in a water-goal when you have a boat.
Is it really cheating my guts out if I’m only using what is at my disposal?
I got the Korok seed.

And then it was off to Kakariko to see if any of my clothes could be upgraded—and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the fairies were back! 8D I had gone through a couple of the ones in my pockets, and they respawned here! That was encouraging. ^_^
It turned out Cotera could only upgrade my Ancient Helm, if I gave her ten of my Ancient Gears. Right then and there.
Didn’t she know how hard those were to come by?
I forgot that idea, and checked the rest of my wardrobe. It looked.... like the next enhancement to my Zora ensemble could be reached easily enough.
I just needed some fish.
Fortunately, I had a sample of what I needed on me—I threw a Hearty Bass on the ground, took a picture of it, loaded it into my Compendium, and tuned my sensor.... If I could just get enough of these....
But first I headed down from Cotera’s spring into the village proper, and found Paya up in Impa’s house.
“It’s almost dawn,” she said, “If you haven’t slept yet, you really should... Staying up late can’t be great for your health.”
....
I considered the hour.
It was quite late. Not as late as last time, but.... still quite late.
I’d been all over the map.
I know from experience that it’s hard to go to bed without having caught something you’ve been chasing.
I think.... it’s the same going to bed without having escaped something you’ve been fleeing.
My rage was not done.
But.... maybe Paya was right.
I saved my game,
and quit,
and went to bed.
