The Promise Of Ages

Evening of Wednesday, June 19, 2019 (comprised of many raw note editings from May 1 through May 10, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long) ~ 4

The Promise Of Ages

The Calamity howled his thousand-dragon-howl, bracing his monumental hooves and throwing up his neck, his putrid tongue lolling between his jaws—the Eyeball in the nape roved and twitched—

And a Lightthat Light again!

A White Light SHOT UP from deep beneath the muscled crest of the Beast.

It was her....

It was Zelda.

It was Princess Zelda.

She gleamed like a Star in the Heavens, hands clasped before her as if in prayer, eyes serenely closed, golden light gleaming from her person and leaving a spray of diamonds in her wake.

She was free of the Demon’s grasp.

Everything had stopped. Only the holy resounding ringing of her appearance chimed ceaselessly, cyclicly, like a heavenly glass armonica, humming and shimmering to eternity.

The Calamity snorted, the sound shrunken, roomed in without an echo, as his eyes beheld the Princess.

She hovered back down, haloed as if by a holy golden flame, alighting in the grass so softly she did not even bend. Gentle as a flower, soft as a sigh, she opened her eyes, and no fear marred her brow.

The Demon collapsed onto its chest before her, crashing massively at her feet, its all-rending tusks coming close to crushing her on either side—

and yet never close at all.

Still blazing, still heaving, still rumbling, the wind of its throes sweeping the grass and casting up the Princess’ hair—

And yet all about her person still was only that serenity, and that gentle ringing.... and perhaps.... as her brow betrayed the slightest furrow.... perhaps.... a little sorrow.

Her eyes looked on the Demon then, purposefully.

And that was the only sign to be seen.

The holy light around her pulsed into renewed ringing, the golden flames moving, growing stronger, no longer at rest, the little glimmers breathing about her person now casting forward like embers in a wind.... toward the Demon.... toward the Calamity.

The Beast chuffed, roared, gnawing the air, its jaws working—what it couldn’t grind to a pulp with that defiling tongue, the foul teeth....

Its eyes still gaping....

But for only a moment more.

For in the next breath the Princess’ shining and ringing redoubled, tripled, overflowed beyond themselves all at once into a radiating brilliance. She was become a tremoring golden sun made flesh, as waves of holy light washed outward and over the Demon.

Beaming spears of golden light shining outward in every direction from her person....

And this final insistence could not be denied.

With a last descending groan, the Calamity mourned out its defiance as its body, the horrible, writhing, Malice-bound mountain of itself, began to recede and wither away, evaporating beneath the Princess’ holy light.

An almighty sizzling electrified the landscape as the hot magenta flames were purged from the crumbling form, licking up into the sky, until all the was left.... was that ghostly form I had first seen of it so long ago.

It mounted into the air, coiling from the cloud of its corporeal death and twining like a snake—its terrifying jaws still roaring fit to swallow the world—

It swooped and stooped like an enormous bird of prey, unable yet to take that woman in its jaws—

But Zelda—her eyes still calm, her brow even, her lips not yet even parted—indeed her face as set and still as one holding her breath underwater—Zelda raised her hand with a final renewed gleaming, and—

SHEEEN-RING!

The sound was like the resonance of an everlasting church bell, mighty from a cathedral tower, resounding and warming and booming and golden without fading and without concussive instigation. Just.... ringing.

The Princess conjured an ever expanding sphere of holy golden light against the Demon’s last lunge. Its wickedness could not stand before her Power, falling to dark shreds and nothing before the divine glow, the sacred Triforce ringing at the center.

The sphere continued to grow, as if to cast a shield around all of Hyrule....

But its only aim was the Calamity—the fleeing Calamity Ganon—and it engulfed him, even his ghostly form then deforming, the jaw unhinging one last time as the Light consumed him and he vanished. His terrible, terrible eyes....

Zelda stood, her right hand still raised, the mighty, flaming, burning, golden sphere of her holy Sealing Power still ringing upon the earth.... until with a final rush like a whipping flag, the mighty sphere shrank with a subito sudden silence, and—Vvp!

!

Blinked its bound captive out of existence.... and back into planes of darkness.

The world faded out to white.... for a looong, loong breath.

And then....

DESTROY GANON

COMPLETE

I exhaled, and Mom and I gazed and gasped in wonderment at each other.

I didn’t think I would do this on a Wednesday!” I growled in happy exasperation.

The world faded back into view—the battlefield faded back into view.

The sky still raged crimson beneath a Blood Moon.

But.... no....

Light was beginning to shine through.

The racing cloud-wrack, so fitfully tormented, began at last to still, its nightmare finally ending....

The Castle pillars in the distance—they were blue now.

The Piano was the first to step back onto the grass. And it tenderly held the hand of the Lullaby, and led it childlike back to she to whom it belonged, where she stood in the grass. Even as the last dusty maroon in the sky was giving way to lavender.... to the shadow of blues waiting to be born....

“I’ve been keeping watch over you all this time...” the Princess halted.

Her back was to me. That beautiful white dress. The very same? The one with a Grecian grace....

The fiery glow left her hair as the sky cooled further still.

“I’ve witnessed your struggles to return to us as well as your trials in battle.”

I stepped toward her. The Bow of Light still slung across my back.

But she still didn’t turn.

Under the foggy blue of the sky, she had returned to her proper honey-blonde now. The trees in the distance beyond her now green again, no longer clawing nightmares....

“I always thought—no, I always believed—that you would find a way to defeat Ganon.”

The sun beamed brighter still. Haloing us both.

“I never lost faith in you over these many years...”

As at last her feet stepped—swiveledand stood.

She was a lily about to bloom under the radiant sun’s light, shining new on the world.

“Thank you, Link...”

Hands still clasped so elegantly over her heart.

“...the hero of Hyrule.”

And her green eyes shone. No longer burdened, no longer so solemnly set in power so great and terrible.

Just.... smiling.

But the little furrow came back, as her shoulders rose yet.... and a gentle uncertainty tugged at her brow.

“May I ask...” she started breathlessly....

And the Music held its peace.

“Do you really remember me?”

As we stood apart, together, in the sun.

—A timeless piping took my hand, though, singing the Ancient Song, as it drew the curtain on the Orchestra’s soft cadence, and faded the scene to black.... the Piano voicing the final tremulous laughter from my quivering throat.

The Day The Hero Fell

Waking of Saturday, May 4, 2019 ~ 3

The Day The Hero Fell

Night is falling.

I step into the light....

Fire and Rain.

Guardians.... Guardians.... so many guardians.... so many Guardians, crawling, crawling....

One of them senses.... something....

Zelda and I.... we stand in the midst of this hell.

Filthy and ragged.

I.... am in a bad way.

We are all in a bad way.

“Link, save yourself, go!” The Princess’ hands are on my shoulders from behind as I kneel in the mud before her. We are both filthy and ragged.

My clothes are torn. I only pant in exhaustion....

“I’ll be fine! Don’t worry about me,” she sobs, “Run!”

But I bow my head in pain.... and then struggle back to my feet, hauling myself up with my sword, and stand unsteadily in front of her.

The Guardian sees us in earnest, and comes.

It comes closer, it targets its laser upon us—upon me....

NO!

Zelda—

She stands in front of me Princess what are you—and raises her right hand in strong warding and—

That light.

A brilliant, pure, golden light emanates from her open palm, the holy Triforce gleaming through her hand—

And bursts forth in a sphere, ever expanding, light shooting toward the heavens in a rupturing pillar—

And the Guardian stops, freezes up.... and wilts with a mechanical juddering.... And the Malice is purged, cast out of the Guardians all around.... it dissipates feebly into the air before evaporating with an evil hiss.... and the Guardians collapse and die....

Zelda’s Lullaby thrumming through soft women’s voices on an ooh....

Zelda stands bewildered.

“Was... Was that... the Power....?

Thud.

I’ve fallen onto my left side.

I’m on the ground.

“Oh, no, no!” Zelda runs to me and rolls me to my back, puts her left hand under my nape and lifts me. “Link! Get up!”

She calls my name and lifts me up—I cough—and my eyes open, and I look at her but.... oh my wincing brow and . . . . I am . . . . no . . . . this is pain . . . . this is . . . .

“You’re going to be just fine...” she calls to me, but....

And I groan, but....

But....

And with a last sigh I fall limp in her arms.

There’s.... nothing....

And Zelda.... “No, no,” she cries—

And back down.... my form is heavy and she lays me back down onto her folded thighs where she kneels, her face crumpling into my chest. Muddy boots, gashes all over.

No.... no....

But the Master Sword....

Still clutched inverted in my left hand.

It....

It pulses. Gleams and pulses rhythmically a few times....

And it sounds like.... Fi....

The Princess hears it, lifts her head and sees it.... bright and anomalous in this nightmare world.

“The sword?” Zelda croaks.

As if it speaks to her.

“So he can.... he can still be saved?

Dares she believe it....

Princeeeess!

Two strong Sheikah men come leaping over the field to her. Swiftly in and then quickly knelt down. Ready. Sharp and able. “Princess! Are you all right?!”

Princess Zelda snaps to. She is the Royal Sovereign and she is decisive. She instructs them, “Take Link to the Shrine of Resurrection! If you don’t get him there immediately we are going to lose him forever. Is that clear?!”

The masked Sheikah Soldiers nod firmly.

Her voice is strong. Commanding.

Stronger than I’ve ever heard it before.

“So make haste and go! His life is now in your hands!”

As the last crimson light fades from the ruined Guardian’s wasted shell....

Most memories I only let myself watch once, but....

This one I will spurge it again and again, and crystallize its essence in word.

Dark Ascent

Waking of Monday, April 22, 2019 ~ 4

I still stood on Zelda’s Bridge.
I was feeling pretty accomplished! and now didn’t quite know what to do with myself.

....

Well, I came here for the memory, and I got it.
But before I go, I want.... that. The highest tower.

....

I’m gonna go get it.
*
Okay, Revali’s Gale did not work from my position of clinging to the top of the spire—scrabbled to throw another A-press and paraglide anyway, from the spire atop Zelda’s Study to.... further in.
I couldn’t tell. Maybe I could, once, in another life. But at present I barely had a grasp of the castle’s interior, and a great deal of that was collapsing in ruin. The higher exterior was a Malice-tormented forest of spires, tiered cliffsides, battlements running from who knows to why not, and the mightiest of flying buttresses. For myself it was only a fretful, embered surreptition of climbing towers.... paragliding.... climbing towers again.... So much Malice.... the air so blustery.... and I always wondering whether a Guardian would target me at any moment....
The cross section of the roughly conical shape of the castle grounds was narrowing; I was definitely making progress. I paraglided again—Sanctum—the name of the new locale gleamed into terrible focus across my screen—“NO, I DON’T WANT THE SANCTUM!” I hollered as I sailed toward the fire-bright architecture glowing under the hellish sky. I was not ready for this.
I slammed into a wall and clung on for dear life and was afraid to touch the ground below me. Would it trigger something? Defying physics I demanded my way instead up over a horizontal battlement until I could stand again.
I did not want anywhere called a “Sanctum”.... Not now....
I kept climbing.
Oh my gosh I could see inside windows and places to go, a hole in the floor with a ladder leading down OH GOSH....
Oh, nope, nope, NOPE, NOPE! Nope, nope. Nope! NOPE! NOPE!
*
I got up on top of a tower with a busted top; the collapse was flat enough to stand on. I am so high up now. I could see the tops of those five columns.... Might even be able to paraglide to one of them, but.... NO, first....
>_<
Oh man....
Very close.... I was very close.... This seemed to be one of a handful of side towers encircling the uppermost central column of the castle’s architecture.
Okay help me, Revali....
And he did
OH!
GOT ON THE CENTRAL TOWER.
OKAY.
WOW.
OH MY GOHOHOSH, I COULD SEE THE WHOLE WORLD FROM HERE! So narrow, so open, so little to obstruct my views anymore.
All the Divine Beasts’ lasers were pointed right at me..... oh my gosh....
I kept climbing.... up the vertical stone, up the steep shingles.... It got cold, and on went one of my warming circlets.... Who built this spire? Did they freeze too?
“Vah Rudania.... Vah Naboris....” [waitthosetwoaren’tadjacent--] I named the distant, barely visible shapes as they passed under the orbit of my gaze, the ends of their lasers so MONUMENTALLY PRESENT. I kept climbing and looking and I looked up into the raging yellow-orange-fire sky and “WHAAAAT? WHAT IS THAT?
THERE IS A DARK BODY IN THE SKY. ROUND LIKE THE MOON. AN ECLIPSE? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
IT IS NEARLY MIDNIGHT. IS THAT THE BLOOD MOON?
OH MY GOSH.
“I GOTTA SEE IT.” I SAID LIKE IAN MALCOLM. I MEAN. UM. DAVID LEVINSON. JEFF GOLDBLUM.
IS EVERY NIGHT HERE A BLOOD MOON NIGHT?
MIDNIGHT STRIKES.
AND THEN THE DARK BODY TURNED WHITE AND SHRUNK BACK TO SIZE.
IT’S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WHY IS THE SKY STILL SO RAGING?
I KEEP CLIMBING. THE LAST SPIRE’S BASE SO TOWERING AND STRANGE, LIKE A STACK OF ALTERNATING GEARS.
WHO ERECTED THIS TOWER?
AND THEN.... I SEE FLOWING LEAVES AND HEAR THAT LIGHT WOODEN CLATTERING AS I NEAR THE TOP.
Found you.”
I knew it.
I reached the final, heaven-piercing end of the highest spire on the tallest tower, and saddled into a hanging, one-handed cling. My gosh.
I examined the glittering dapple of leaves and woodwindwater sounds—and it was a Korok. Of course. Even here. Just between the beams of Vah Rudania and Vah.... Ruta, I think.
Oh my gosh, I could see the whole world. Everything.
Heuhuhuh! And on my map in the Castle Map, my location-indicator.... that little yellow arrow that showed where I was.... I looked like a flag on a pole.
Oh gosh....
The castle’s billowing Orchestra still blustered all around me like this hellish, hellish sky! What was up with this sky? The everpresent cloud wrack was driven endlessly tormented in unholy flames above my head. Day or night, it was always the beautiful, terrible color of fiery doom, blown on forever by forces unnatural.
So swept the Orchestra. Still pounding, still ringing, still tipping between the Ascending Organ of the Dark One, and the Lullaby of She who held him at bay. The tension between them still tautened on a rusty crank meant for torture before I realized—there was yet another theme there as well. One older even than Zelda’s Lullaby.
Those five notes ascending, springing like a flame, tonic to dominant, root to fifth—in minor this time. Preceded by those two hits that came clomping down like boots with something to say.
1__5__________1_1-2-3-4-5__________!
The Hero’s Theme.
My Theme.
And that made Three.
Should it have come as any surprise?
It pronounced its presence with a percussive flare, and swelled heroically with the string section, as though to proclaim its intention of slicing the ties and bringing this battle to rest one way or the other. Until at the cadence the Castle’s own theme cycled back round to take up the song again.
Like it does.
Should it have come as any surprise? That here in the Heart of Hyrule, here at the Crux of the Age, under the eyes of the Goddesses.... there would be Three.
There would always be Three voices in this Dreadful Dialogue.

....

I’d thought about the logging of this part, and had wanted to say that it wasn’t a Dreadful Dialogue after all, but a Dreadful Trialogue; but then I looked up the Greek roots, and the “dia” of “dialogue” actually meant “through” instead of “two”, and I was vexed by the thwartation and couldn’t bring myself to justify the pun.

The Measure of Creation

Waking of Friday, August 3, 2018 ~ 3

That light—it was definitely a fallen star. If I could just get to where it was in time....
I ran along the high southern bank, rushing for a better view.... There! It was in the wetlands. A warp to the shrine there, a dash through the shallow water.... and it was mine.
Yes!
I looked about me. It had been a while since I’d visited the wetlands. And I was still short on Lizalfos tails....
I hunted them as the day was long.
[Masks are SO handy!]
Still, the element of surprise could only help me so much when it was a Silver Lizalfos. For there were silver ones now, and they were exceptionally strong.
But one good thing I noticed was that these new silver ones were much more willing to part with their tails upon defeat! Excellent. And so I very slowly began to regain my supply....

I was using the Master Sword more and more. And it wasn’t always pristine, and sometimes its power faded completely, and I had to let it rest and breathe.
But I was using it.
I was letting it fulfill its purpose.
And that was all right.

When I couldn’t find any more Lizalfos to fight, I turned once again to the loose Guardian Stalker, donning my double-upgraded Ancient Armor on the approach....
And when I killed it this time.... I wasn’t sure if it was just me, or if it was my armor’s Ancient Proficiency perk at play.... but it seemed that the defeated Guardian dropped more ancient parts than usual. Including a core!
I wonder.... Is that what the Ancient Proficiency did?
I continued to wander all over the wetlands, finding a few more Lizalfos sequestered here and there, scaring up more Koroks, and discovering that the giant water buffalo grazing around were most definitively unrideable. I took a few hits from the great brutes in my close-quarter attempts, but that didn’t keep me down for long. I was bolder than I had been before. Very much so. In my brazen meanderings I even killed the red Hinox before its music could even start up. David remarked on this with an incredulous scoff, and I kept my cool like a boss.

I also began to put into practice one more secret the Master Sword held. Actually I don’t think I would ever have discovered it had the loading screen not mentioned it in passing.
I don’t often throw my weapons, see.
But if you used the same button that would throw any other weapon, with the Master Sword in your hand.... and if you happened to have full hearts and health....
Well, I suppose the result would just stand to reason! for anybody familiar with the Zelda Universe. For myself it was only a surprise until I thought about it for a moment.
I stood at full power, and swung my sword, swung the Master Sword as if to throw it.... and out shot a swirling blue-white bolt of my own! 8D
How far it could travel before disippating depended on how many hearts I had.
But DANG! XD
It was so awesome to fire lasers.
At one point, employing the projected energy to break open ore deposits, I thought I had solved the problem of ever damaging another hammer again. But even without making physical contact, using the laser still sapped the sword’s strength.
I had run it clean out of energy twice now....
Huh.
Well that mechanic never came up in previous games.

Ah well.

When the wetlands were quite empty I decided to take a break on the Hinox’s island, and take a few pictographs of my various weapons for the Compendium.
The Master Sword wasn’t the only thing running out of juice; I puttered around a little further, cleaned out a little cave I found of some treasure....
Hm, perhaps the controller battery was feeling a bit lowly, too.

I took a break.

I went to the fridge and took out the very last bit of Mary’s cake that I had reserved for myself and no one else—it had been my birthday after all.
I had a seat at the table with a nice glass of milk.... and ate the Triforce.

It was delicious.

You Get The Thing

Sunday, July 29, 2018

My birthday was a little bit ago now.... but this evening, the Ben clan came over and my sweet niece Mary, an aspiring young baker, gifted me and absolutely splendiforous two-layer roundcake, frosted in luscious green, and decorated on top with a beautiful, golden-yellow Royal Crest of Hyrule. All in perfect frosting, fondant-free.
She had set the covered dish right in front of me, and it was only after I had removed the lid for the big reveal, that I told her “Oh, I should’ve sung the song as I took off the lid! You know—da-na-na-na, da-na-na-na—” And I hummed that little wind-up tune that plays whenever Link opens an important chest, and finished with a dramatic “DA-DA-DA-DAAAAH!
We laughed.
Dad fetched some candles and—bless his heart, he went back when I asked him if he could find any red ones instead.... I kept the blue and green ones, and he came back with a pink—close enough.
The pink candle went into the top triangle, the blue candle went in the lower left, and the green into the lower right. Triforce colors, Power, Wisdom, and Courage.
Augh what great, geeky revelry! We lit the candles.
My family sang to me in four-part harmony like they do, John and Siara threatening to add an extra cadence like they do....! But they refrained—aaaand I just walked RIGHT into that pun—they all finished up with an extravagant flourish.... and I blew out the candles with a wish.
Hahhhh if a certain someone knew what I wished for....
But you know how it goes—if you say what you wished for out loud, your wish won’t come true.

The cake was delicious. <3
Thank you, Mary. ^_^
