And that has made all the difference.

Afternoon of Tuesday, July 2, 2019 (plus several finicky editings through July 16 because I couldn’t leave it alone) .... (and just one note from 2023)

And that has made all the difference.

It’s been about two weeks since I’ve beaten the game.

And I guess.... I can’t help but feel a kind of letdown.

I’ve experienced it before; I’m sure many people have. You draw near the end of an epic adventure, and you can sense the finality impending somehow, and you almost don’t want to proceed.... even though the Hero in you knows he must.

You don’t want it to be over.

But I guess, for me, here and now at least, it’s not really over. Not really. There are still two shrines to get. More Koroks to find. My Compendium to fill.... And of course the faraway dread terror of the option to Start A New Game, which would overwrite the present. Dratblast it, Nintendo, why couldn’t you make multiple saves....?

But then, they’ve never really done that, not for Zelda games. You were always allotted one file, and that was it. And it sufficed. I think some other JRPGs must have spoiled me....

At any rate it doesn’t have to be really over. There are new files to play, old sequences to break, and beyond a new game.... another new game. For I have seen the new Zelda trailer. Or another old game, for there are some Zeldas I haven’t played yet. Or another different game, for I’ve been hankering after Tales of Symphonia lately for some reason. Or maybe the Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 I picked up for Switch. Always heard good things about those ones....

So I guess this kind of adventure is never really over. But it does come in seasons. And seasons still have to sleep. And that does leave you feeling.... kind of empty. Though like a bygone feast you can still taste it on your lips, and there is great satisfaction in the memory as you finally recline to digest.

I would make a terrible Buddhist.

....

I still have not moved from where I left my saves two weeks ago, but I’ve decided.... not to go back and play from the save before I entered the Sanctum. I won’t overwrite where I’ve been. I don’t want to dishonor the very first ending of my adventure, or vanish my initial slaying of the Great Beast of Malice.

Things experienced for the first time are different. They’re special.... How did I put it....? “....Initial playthroughs are always special, because the secrets and surprises are all fresh, the twists and turns jarring....”

So long ago I said that, back at the head of this very log.

Good thing I wrote it down. The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory.

And speaking of things written down, I found what I thought I had remembered—I did experience that same conundrum of choice before, at the end of Skyward Sword. The abominable saving quandary. I had journaled about it. Of course I had. Because I am the Journaling Fiend. In case you hadn’t noticed by now:

Sunday, June 10, 2012, into the very early morning of Monday, June 11, 2012

I stood stock-still, fearful of accidentally pushing any buttons that might kill the buzz. But as everything finally faded to black, I was presented with a choice.

Do you want to play in Hero Mode?

The affirmative answer read, “Bring it on.”

The negative answer.... well, I can’t remember.

What pause this gave me.

But I never wanted to play this game again, so.... no. No thanks.

Are you sure you want to return to the start menu without saving?

Augh, but I did enjoy the feelings of those cinematics. Although they’re never as good the second time....

Um, no, not sure. Yes. Save.

Your progress up to this point will be deleted. Are you sure you want to save and do Hero Mode?

Deleted? Oh dear. Wait. No, don’t save.

Are you sure you want to return to the start menu without saving?

.... My eyes bugged in flummoxation.

Cinematics, viewed often, lose their charm. I’d negotiated the same turmoil at the first savepoint after Groose crashed my skydiving.

I couldn’t go through those again. No. The adventure I’d just survived, the shattering of my shield in some godforsaken phantom realm of turmoil and lightning.... that insistent little fairy I had forgotten....

No, I wouldn’t go back there again. Among the million different stories told for the million different players, my own version of this adventure had come to too satisfying an end.

This story needed to be saved and put to rest.”

So even then I couldn’t bring myself to erase what had already been done, I see.

Maybe it comes from a journaler’s need to record. To save. For better or worse.

Save file linearity notwithstanding, I ought to be grateful that Breath of the Wild seems to end Ocarina of Time style, rather than Skyward Sword style. That is to say, I can beat the game and have the ending under my belt, and then play the end again without having to start from the very beginning.

And still have time to play in between.

The whole world is open to me now, all of Hyrule. And I am strong. I want to find those shrines.... and then storm the castle again....

....

Did I write down all of Skyward Sword, too? No. No I didn’t. Just bits from the ending, as they struck me so deeply.

Heh, so deeply I could feel their reverberations even here, as Fi still sang her song from a bleeding blade on the battlefield, deep in that last rainy memory....

Did you hear that soundbyte?

Hahhh!

It has always pleased me to write down that which strikes me. Or if not always, then for a very long time at least. It’s therapeutic. It’s insightful. It’s often surprising and inspiring! They say you don’t learn much when your mouth is moving. But I would dare to say it’s the opposite case when your pen is scrawling or your keys are ticky-ticking. In writing down what strikes you, you might just strike yourself in turn.

And in this case of logging down the entire video game of Breath of the Wild.... well, it’s true that it has pleased me, yes.... It has pleased me, bothered me, tickled me, TORMENTED ME, DELIGHTED me, INFURIATED ME, ENRAPTURED ME, and driven me STARK, RAVING and GIBBERING BONKERS.

The entire game.

I wrote the entire game.

I have journaled my way through an entire video game.

What an intriguing notion.

What an exciting project.

What a gargantuan undertaking.

I knew I should’ve set all my affairs in order before I started playing.

Five megabytes this document weighs now. Five megabytes!?

Have you ever written for five megabytes straight? 614 pages of solid twelve-point Times New Roman inside one-inch margins? Though there are some dregs below this down to page 630.... and a lot of material preceding this that remains unedited yet as of this writing; that’ll push this part further down.... And it’s all been slowly shoved ever lower by the ever-expanding CONTENTS section anyway.... I knew the confluences would never last whenever I remarked on what page I was on.... Where’s Revali now?

....Heh, looks like he’s been pushed to page 501.

Poor sod.

Five megabytes....

279,000 words.

[And I’m sorry to say, as of the deep waking of Thursday, May 11, 2023, that I can calculate the final size no further, due to much of the latter portions of this work being completed in segments post-computer-failure. But maybe some day.]

I wrote the entire game.

I’ve scripted a searchable Let’s Play.

I’ve birthed a mutant metafanfiction.

I actually made it through.

....

It’s been a different experience for me than for anybody else, I think.

Well, of course it has; that’s how Zelda games are, and especially this one. But.... I mean a very different experience. Very far from.... normal.

And I cannot deny that it has affected my playing.

It takes time to write. And being tied to the log.... I couldn’t move as fast as I might have otherwise done in the game.

I remember playing Twilight Princess for the first time, plunging ahead, hurtling forward through the frays, into the woods, into the darkness, breaking out of dungeons, stalking in fearful yearning through lonely shadows, running in desperation and longing for stolen friends, staying up late into the nights, losing sleep and geeking all over my friends the following days, lamenting that I COULD NOT FIND THE CHILDREN.

How invigorating, how all-consuming it was! What a RUSH!

....

But I couldn’t do that with Breath of the Wild. I couldn’t plunge ahead.

Or I didn’t let myself.

I had to move slowly.

Or I chose to.

I chose to put the game away for weeks at a time and force myself to catch up on logging when I really wanted to keep playing.

Wary of spoilers, I chose to shut myself out from certain internet groups. I chose to stop watching certain art circles—oh, that was the hardest. I chose to interact only cautiously with other Zelda fans whilst I floundered behind in the game.

For two years I shied away from the jabbering Zelda community, to keep the discoveries and twists and turns safe for me to discover on my own. And whenever I did find something incredible or unbelievable, all I could do was wonder.... Have people already talked about this? Did they discuss it all in a flurry, months ago? Were there funrowdy times of tightly localized exploration or experimentation, with bursts of forum posts and YouTube videos? ....Or am I the only one in all the world who knows about.... this? And I too isolated to ask aloud.

It felt very.... solitary, a lot of the time. Even when I’d caught up to David, and could finally relieve him from keeping his mouth so faithfully, painfully shut for me. He was heroic, really.

Do I regret any of this?

No. I don’t. I can’t. I chose this.

And besides, the experience was not without its own kind of reward and fulfillment. Chewing and stewing for so long over every point in the game, giving myself time enough for writing, time enough for deepest thought upon every last person and creature and bug that stepped into my path, has granted me a finer and more flavorful vision of the myriad denizens of Hyrule than I could ever have expected. Like Pi drifting slowly over the ocean, seeing and knowing every fish and turtle and whale, instead of only the spray of a rapid wake.

I really did care for Leekah and her poor unlucky happenstance. How could I not, when I barred myself from leaping headlong into so many other multitudes of things to worry about? I really rooted for tender young Kabetta, and seeing his efforts made me both proud and worried. It was heartening and encouraging to see Mils and Mina standing their ground so bravely. Calyban’s turn to generosity truly warmed my heart. Benny’s brave curiosity was endearing and inspiring. I wished Tye and Sorelia all the happiness in the world. I couldn’t bring myself to blame Jerrin.... too much. But I could Zyle; OH who raised that man....? I sometimes felt sorry for murdering hapless red Bokoblins far below my level, while I was under the guise of my Mask. Fronk’s bowed and weeping gratitude made every second of the outlandish pains I took to find and bring back his wife Mei absolutely worth it. Seeing Kass come home to be with his family and make beautiful music with his daughters was so utterly fulfilling, especially to my musician’s heart. And hearing lessons from Sesami’s friend Palme—the man with the unflattering haircut, the poor lost wanderer, the softest and most unable man in a fight—as he delivered the truest, deepest, and most unexpectedly powerful words of wisdom for a meaningful life... is an instance I will treasure.

It’s been a different experience for me, playing this game. Different than it otherwise might have been.

But I don’t regret it.

....

There’s a strange catch there, though. When you think about it, I really can’t regret it. If it was a choice between playing it through for the first time normally, and playing it through for the first time with a journal in tow.... there is no way I would be able to experience both of those. I can play it through for the first time only once.

And so unable to compare the two, how could I know which would have been better or more enjoyable?

I couldn’t.

It’s like that Robert Frost poem about two roads. You are only one traveler; you can’t walk them both.

But I suppose such fractaled pathways are what make life interesting. It’s all right to favor one horizon over another; there are enough to go around.

And from what I have observed, in myself and in others, I think I can rest on that.... as far as The Legend of Zelda ~ Breath of the Wild goes.... I think any pathway would have proven to be good, beautiful, beloved and fulfilling.

But I think I really did take the road less traveled.

I can’t know what it’s like to play Breath of the Wild like I’ve played other Zelda games. And that’s all right. But maybe.... if I’ve wielded my words right.... you reading this can glean some small taste of what it’s like to play the game with Contraltissimo’s very fine-toothed comb. Maybe the experiences are similar after all. I wouldn’t know.

But you might.

Looks like you have the advantage here.

And in truth.... I am glad to offer it, if you’re willing to take it.

After all, it’s dangerous to go alone.

Now, I think I’ll finally have a listen to that Breath of the Wild ~ Sound Selection disc that came with the statue and the Switch case and everything else in that super-mega-deluxe-or-whatever-it-was version of the game I bought.

Hey, music can be spoilerish too! Of course I put it away for later. It was only recently that I actually took off the shrinkrap and loaded the tracks onto my original black iPod Nano, Sylphie. Named for a mermaid.

And now.... I think I’ll finally let myself enjoy it.

As well as the complete soundtrack I bought more recently. Hm, which includes music from the DLC....

Guess I’d better play that, too. I did purchase it, two years ago. I’ve just never booted it up. But in the sparse visits I allowed myself into the Zelda circles of the internet in the meanwhile, I received some very high recommendations for it.

Think I’ll play with my amiibos too at some point. And maybe.... see how the game feels on the Switch.

Man. I’ve put off a lot these past two years.

I just wanted the pure experience first.

Well, I got it.

Boy did I get it.

Turns out anything worth doing.... really is worth overdoing.

That’s why all Heroes are called Fools.

This is Contraltissimo, signing off.

Privy Thoughts Again

Evening of Wednesday, June 19, 2019 (comprised of many raw note editings from May 1 through May 10, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long)

Privy Thoughts Again

I had asked the interwebs the previous day. Or the day before. For help. Help on the last two shrines. There was no answer for a long time.

But there was an answer today.

But I didn’t look at it. Because David.... encouraged me not to. He told me I was like the church member who finally just said That’s it I’m gonna try a beer, and then ALL my friends who drink would be like NONONONONO DON’T DO THAT??

Keepin’ me on the straight and narrow.

So I left the thread alone.

And I never went back.

That teaser for a Breath of the Wild sequel came out the other day.... I saw Link and Zelda traveling underground..... leading some large, horned pack-beast.... and Zelda had cut her hair!

And I just thought Underground.... underground....

If I play that game.... and I don’t meet up again with Master Kohga....

If Master Kohga doesn’t appear again with his antics

and all his silly dialogue....

If I don’t get to kick that guy’s butt again

until he becomes a good guy,

becomes a part of my nakama,

becomes my Friend....

Well that would just be the saddest panda.

~

Is nakama even the right word?

I can’t remember my Japanese art history class....

~

I had only one hundred and eighteen shrines.

....

I must....

I must look forward.

I cannot see another way....

Do I dawdle?

Do I try?

Where do I go?

....

My shoulder was too girly and roundy; no way the Little Link was gonna stay put there. I reclined him comfortably on the couch beside me instead.

....

I saved.

I went.

And I was in the Library. In a little concealed hidey-hole that had somehow always escaped my notice until now, hidden behind another Magnesable bookshelf at the head of the room.

The King’s Study.

Saved here, and....

There was a chest, with a gold rupee inside it, and....

There was a book.

Sitting open on a stately desk.

King Rhoam’s Journal.

The Writings of

Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule

Today, as the sun rose and a new day

was born, my daughter, too, joined this

sweet world.

Oh.... such a span of years in this journal!

In keeping with the traditions of

the royal family, I have decided

to name her...Zelda.

I am not a man accustomed to frivolous

musings, but now seems as good a time

as any to begin my royal memorandum.

Next.

Reports keep arriving regarding the

excavation of relics. The fortune teller’s

predictions seem to be coming true.

That Fortune-Teller again....

Calamity Ganon was not a figure of fable,

or even of legend. He actually existed in

our great land of Hyrule.

What was that even like? To not know, to have him be so distant.... So distant it feels like just a legend. A story....

We must investigate all the relics, learn

as much as we can. But understanding

the Divine Beasts alone will take time...

Zelda’s eyes lit up like a wildfire when

I told her about the relics... I must admit,

she has a knack for research.

The King admits it.... But.... He still must have felt the sway of the mighty responsibilities on their shoulders....

Next.

My Queen has left this world. [Oh....] Her death

was so sudden and unexpected, I awaken

most nights unsure if she is really gone.

Zelda never cried, never faltered. [No?] Not

even during the royal funeral or later

when she and I were alone with our grief.

I must assume her strength is a result of

us repeatedly informing her of her duty

to be a valiant and steady princess.

I wonder.... That woman from her dream....

For a child of merely six [Six??] years of age,

her conduct was truly that of a born

leader. Her strength gives me hope.

From now on, I must raise her all alone...

Now, only I remain to prepare her for her

difficult future as princess of Hyrule.

I wonder.... if there have ever been Hyrulean Princesses who were not named Zelda....

Next.

Zelda finally reported back after her visit

to the fountain. [Oh not this day already, surely....] It seems her sacred

sealing power has still yet to awaken.

It has been a year and three months

since her mother passed. [Oh, no, she was younger then.... a different fountain maybe....] Perhaps she is

held back by heartache too deep to heal.

If the Ganon prophecy wasn’t looming

over our heads, I would tell her to take

her time... To wait until she is ready.

They—or he—did feel the pressure, then.

But our situation is dire and leaves no

room for weakness—even on behalf of

my beloved daughter.

It.... must have been hard. For him.

My heart breaks for Zelda, but I must act

as a king, not a father. I must order her

to train relentlessly at the fountain.

Next.

I was told Zelda went off to research

ancient technology, so I had no

choice but to confront her about it.

That day.

She claims she was simply using her day

off from training to indulge in a bit of

research, but still I scolded her.

She won’t get it through her head...

Forcing me to tell her the same thing

I have been repeating ad nauseam.

No but she must have known.... But felt so helpless....

The reason her sacred powers still won’t

awaken is because she’s spending all her

efforts playing at being a scholar!

Huhhhh.

Next.

In truth, I understand Zelda’s feelings.

Painfully so. She lost her mother, her

teacher, before she could learn from her.

Ten pointless years of self-training,

without so much as a book or note

to help her find her way...

It sounds.... hard.

Those in the castle talk behind her back.

And I, her only family, scold her for

her shortcomings.

Hhhhh.

No wonder she wishes to hide away in

her beloved relic research. I’d love

nothing more than to console her...

These two poor hard lost souls.

But I must stay strong. She MUST

fulfill her duty, just as we all must.

Even if she comes to despise me.

I cannot fault him. He is being a father. He is being a man.

Next.

I have been told my Zelda went to the

Spring of Wisdom...

Not this day.

This will likely be her last chance. [....Does he.... sense something, somehow?]

If she is unable to awaken her power

at Lanayru, all hope is truly lost.

No.

Please, do not tell me the King died thinking ruin and calamity had come upon him because of his daughter....

If she comes back without success,

then I shall speak kindly with her.

Scolding is pointless now.

Lost.... lost....

Lost chances.

I forced 10 years of training on her...

and after all that, it seems her power

will stubbornly awaken some other way.

Perhaps I should encourage her to keep

researching her beloved relics. They may

just lead her to answers I can’t provide.

For now, I sit anxiously, more a father

than a king in this moment. I sit and

await my daughter’s return.

....

That.... is the end.

This study.

....

I wonder how it ended for him.

....

I have to go.

I will try to make my way to the top.

After I save again....

Shrine Out Of Time 2 - Grace Under Pressure

Evening of Tuesday, November 17, 2020 (comprised of some raw note editings from April 29 through April 30, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long)

Shrine Out Of Time 2 - Grace Under Pressure

I was at my Hateno House.

How long had it been? How long had it been since I had played? Or at least since I had been at Ben’s house, watching him play, or Dottie, or Mary, or whoever it was?

They have a WiiU, now, and Breath of the Wild, and game files of their own.

They’re loving it.

And we have so much fun talking about it.

Talking.

I never really put or imagined any bars against Word-Of-Mouth. Not something so old and basic and pure.

There was no harm there.

And we had been talking about all the shrines we had been to, and Ben had brought up that crazy lady on the beach, fawning over the ancient Shrine-Orb and calling it Roscoe....

What?

They’d known, I think, that I had every single shrine in the game except for one.

Fair enough odds for talk.

But when Ben saw the incomprehension on my face, the not recognizing, the hungry, affronted, but still piqued eyes.... he made his own surprised face.

And I pursued after the general location from him....

Something about a beach....

Something about south of the.... that stable.... the one near the Horse God....

Roscoe....

And I tucked it away for later.

And later came, and went.

It’s just been so hard.

This year, I guess.

!

I didn’t even remember to put the date.

It’s fixed now.

What happened to my writing?

I used to write on my lunches.

Oh how I used to write! All through lunch and bleeding over into work time again, simply because I could, if we were caught up.

But I didn’t like that job.

They treated me well. Very well. And they paid me well. I had great benefits. There was often food. Lots of treats. Birthdays often meant whole lunch outings. There were holidays, and barbecues. My manager was great. My coworkers were warm and friendly.

But I didn’t like any of the horizons I could see at that job.

I didn’t want to live on that mountain.

There was nothing there. Nothing fulfilling.

And so in February, I took a leap of faith.... and got a different job.

I started it the first Monday in March, right before the madness hit.

And I’ve been there ever since.

Only now.... at home. Where I am not isolated in a cubicle with nothing but my computer, but where all the blasted house is open to me any time I want.

I miss.... the constraints. The pressure.

Pressure.... allows for friction.

And friction allows for movement.

We’re not supposed to live like this.

That’s what happened to my writing.

It’s so close at hand, that I can do it any time.

And that’s the problem.

But tonight.... Something made me get on tonight.

I guess there is a kind of pressure, somewhat.

I’m running out of time.

You see, there is a game that I preordered earlier.

Huh—has it only been within this year?

For when I left my previous job, I cashed in my “EPIC” points—some goofy system of kudos and praise where you can accumulate points and get a fancy pen or something after like five years—and I got what was honestly the most appealing thing I could find in the entire catalogue: a $25 gift card to GameStop.

And then what seems like much later—a month ago? Two months?—something was announced. Some game was announced. Something beyond which I knew there would be no more hope for me. Something that indeed I wanted to suck me in and carry me away....

It’s hard.... journaling a game.

I think.... I miss being carried away all in a rush.... It’s hard to remember.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Goodness. Gracious. Me.

And so.... back when it was announced, I went to my local GameStop.... and with the help of the gift card that I’d been holding onto for months, I preordered the upcoming game.

And it comes out this Friday.

So I knew.... that it was time to strike out and find.... this Roscoe....

Huh. I just vomited those two pages straight into the document in.... not a lot of time.

Maybe my writing’s not so gone as I thought. ☼

Shrine Out Of Time 1.2 - One Day In Kakariko

Saturday, February 1, 2020 (comprised of semi-raw note editings from April 24 through April 28, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long)

Shrine Out Of Time 1.2 - One Day In Kakariko

Hackeysack.

I was feeling like a hackeysack. That much I remember.

I felt like I was being kicked from boot, to boot, to boot, when all I wanted was to finally be allowed to grind my face into the pavement and die already.

I made a choice then. That much I remember, too.

I chose to not record.... whatever it was. No. whatever they were. For there were many things. I remember.

Me! The journaling fiend?

I remember deciding I did not want to tote along that kind of negativity with me.

There are holes in my journal and I’ve been only slightly infuriated with myself ever since. Is oblivion not worse than mere remembered evil?

....

Well, I succeeded in my goal; I really haven’t toted whatever it was along with me.

I’ve forgotten.

....

I hate forgetting.

....

What glimpses can I recall? I didn’t like any of the horizons I could see at my job.... Had my computer’s graphics processing unit malfunctioned by this time? Had Adobe yet subsequently revoked my CS6 license after I fixed it? The update had put me on the Catalina operating system—iTunes couldn’t play on Catalina. No more music; not even that cleansing escape. Not even that cleansing escape. When did the security doors go up? I couldn’t even see the birds out the window anymore, now they were so pixelated by the new screens. Too many doors, too many locks, no easy going outside anymore. The one brother who always came to me for such ready and available music theory help would not now help me in my time of deepest and most desperate need with simple sound balancing, at which he was just as much or more a swift expert—I was on a time limit. Was anything else of mine broken or ruined by my visiting family at that time? How many times had that happened?

This is making me really depressed. Not good for trying to get myself to write, to log, to flesh all the rest of these notes out quickly before Tears of the Kingdom comes out.

I am trying.

[ --- ], I am trying so hard.

It felt like my whole world was shrinking.

There must be more. I know there’s more. Ugh. Maybe I was right. Maybe I should just honor the choice I made before.... however infuriating I find the results now....

Not like me....

Not like me at all.... to banish information from the Record....

Where was I?

I was in Hell.

But I could use this crack in time right now.... for a little more Breath of the Wild....

There had been buzzkill. But no more.

Doing the thing bloody properly, now....

All right. It was right after five in the morning.

I was going to go see what Cado and Dorian were all up ons about....

“New clothes! Cute outfits!” Lasli shouted at me as I strode up the thoroughfare once more. But I was far too focused to pay her any mind. Let’s see....

“Who did this?” said Cado.

“I can’t believe this,” Dorian murmured in kind.

I approached them....

Cado?

“Link. We were standing guard the whole time, and yet this awful thing still happened. How could we have let someone sneak right past us?”

Dorian....

“Someone snuck in and stole Lady Paya’s most prized possession...”

Lady Paya, was it?

Dorian continued, “I’m sure Lady Paya would feel a little more at ease if she saw Master Link’s face.”

....I supposed she was of a good and noble stock after all.

I climbed up the steps to see....

Actually—

I was still dressed in my sneaky clothes.

....

.... Lemme change....

....

Okay, Champion’s Tunic and some Amber Earrings. And Hylian Trousers. Very good.

Now....

I walked into Impa’s house just after 5:30 in the morning.

“This is awful...” Paya was crying on the dark wood floor.

Paya, what is it?

Link...” she raised her face from her hands and looked at me. “I swear I only took my eyes off it for a second!”

I looked and Oh my.... The Orb is gone!

“What should I... What should I do?” Paya shivered.

My choices: “What’s wrong?” or “Keep your chin up.”

I’d say.... I’d just ask what’s wrong.

“The Sheikah heirloom...” Paya whimpered, “The heirloom has been stolen!” As the camera zoomed in to the now vacant cushion.

“And just when I had finally discovered the heirloom’s secret...” Paya went on.

Oh really! Now I am legitimately intrigued....

She broke down into tears.... still kneeling before the spot where the orb used to be....

Impa spoke up: ““The hero, as chosen by the Sheikah heriloom, will be gifted the blessing of antiquity.”

That was a lotta red text.

“Paya thinks “The hero, as chosen by the Sheikah heirloom” is you, so she stayed up all night researching the heirloom.”

The younger woman continued to cry into her palms as Impa went on, “She came to the conclusion that “the blessing of antiquity” refers to one of those ancient shrines. And that the heirloom is the key that opens the shrine. And just before we were able to tell you this, the thing is stolen!”

“I had been cleaning the heirloom regularly every day from morning to dusk,” Paya piped up.

Now that is devotion.

Oh, she is hiccoughing with sobs, the poor girl....

“Someone must have stolen it during the deepest hour of the night,” she went on.

And it wasn’t me, dang it.

“This place is off-limits to outsiders... And no one from the village would do such a thing! Would they?” she added disbelievingly.

The Stolen Heirloom quest banner gleamed across the screen. Shrine quest! Excellent.

Paya continued, “Someone with evil intent came into this sacred place. I’m glad Grandmother is safe, but I still feel so...violated.”

Oh poor Paya....

I.... I know how you feel, Paya.

I know.

.... I’m experiencing a slight shift of.... shift of....

....

Don’t worry, Paya.

She buried her face in her hands again.

And with a heavy sigh I had not heard before, Impa chimed in again, “Link... Paya is afraid that the thief may still be nearby. Would you please stay by her side today?”

Of course I would.

And I nodded.

Blackout.

The scene faded back in and Paya and I were in her upstairs room. It seemed.... mistier. A ghostly haze.

I supposed the day must have passed.

She sighed in an easier tone than she had downstairs earlier.

“Master Link... Thank you for staying by my side for the whole day.”

Of course, Paya. :)

“I see now that crying and feeling scared won’t help us get the heirloom back.”

Heh, they didn’t help me much with Guardians either. It’s okay.

“I checked with Dorian and Cado, but they said they didn’t see anyone other than villagers around,” Paya supplied, “I’ll try again to remember all I can about the night the heirloom was stolen, but the thief may still be hiding nearby.”

And then, “I have a bad feeling. If you spot any suspicious movement at night, don’t approach...”

Now that I can’t promise, Paya....

And the cutscene released me.

What time was it?

It was 7:05 pm.

Hm....

I’d spent the day with Paya.

Now night was falling....

....

Papa’s got some hunting to do....

Cado and Dorian only let known villagers in....

They said the only people who’d stopped by yesterday were Lasli and Mellie. Lasli from the clothing shop and Grandma Mellie from the plum garden. In blue font....

Cado said they usually came by during the day, but they’d recently started coming at night?

In my mind I had thought a Yiga, but....

A villager? Really?

Lasli? To whom I brought those fireflies?

....

Let’s go see....

I ran to Lasli before she could close up shop.

“We’re open every day! Prepare to be...Enchanted!”

“Nighttime activities?” I asked. The new dialogue option was certainly to the point!

“Excuse me?” Oh she had a wicked grimace on her pretty face now.... “It’s none of your business what I do at night!”

Goodness.

“Maybe think about finding a new pick-up line,” she growled!

And I could get nothing more from her.

....

What a turn from that pretty face among the fireflies’ glow.

....

I ran around.

Where was the plum garden? No, not that Grandma, that’s Nanna. From Lasli’s house.

Ran around some more, went a bit down the hill—there was an elderly person! I paraglided down....

She exclamation pointed just as I—no, just before I landed.

“Who’s there?!” she started at my approach. And then as she saw me clearly, “Hmph... Following a weak, old woman around like some kind of creepy delinquent!”

Really now.

....

Wait had I ever.... spoken to this woman before? Why don’t I remember your name as well as I remember those of the other villagers, Mellie? Mmm could be coincidence....

“Are you into older women or something?”

Are you a cougar?

“Well, there’s nothing wrong with that... but I’m married to a fightin’ man, I’ll have you know!”

And the dialogue ended.

I wasn’t interested in a married woman, Mellie.

....

Hmmm.

I wondered.... about the pedestal in the woods.... I could go check and see if anything had changed....

No but I’d just....

I’d just talk to Mellie once more first....

“I can tell you’re into older women,” she said, “but I’m married. Give it up.”

Okay, she really didn’t have anything else to say.

And Lasli?

....said the same thing she said last time.

But then nine o’clock struck, and she started to move. No longer the daily clappercaller.

“Any minute now,” I heard her mutter. Huh....

I spoke to her again. “What?” she said, or something like it. Then, under her breath, “Is this guy some kind of stalker? He’s a stalker! I’m being stalked! So this is what it’s like... I guess I’ll have to visit him later.”

Him? Who’s him?

She raised her voice to full volume again: “It... It sure is dangerous to be out alone at night, huh? Maybe I’ll just...head back to the shop.”

Why, if your shift is over?

Hmmm...

These two women were sneaking around at night!

I snuck up on Lasli again.

“Who’s there?” she jolted, “Is someone following me? If you’re following me, Jarod... I told you it’s over between us! So stop following me!”

Jarod?

Lasli then went back to the shop.... Going to start over I reckoned.... She’d been heading for the graveyard.... Maybe I’d follow her this time... Or precede her....

It was kind of like following that Korok.... back in the woods....

When Lasli finally came to a standstill in the graveyard, she seemed to be praying before a gravestone....

Huhhhh dare I interrupt her?

....

Yes.

AHHHH!” she shrieked.

And then after a frozen second, “I guess I can’t keep it a secret any longer,” she moaned. “Not even Claree knows... This is...where the love of my life sleeps. No other guy has been able to stack up.”

Oh.

“He passed a long time ago, but I come here every now and then to be with him.”

My only response was.... “Where’s the heirloom?” Oh gosh....

Heirloom? You mean that thing in Impa’s house?”

And again my only option: “Did you steal it?” So to the point! Too to the point!

“What?!” she asked, but her voice felt.... too coy.... “Why would I steal something like that? Are you... Are you following me because you think I’m a suspect?!”

I just.... nodded.  :|

“How awful of you...” she growled.

And that was.... it.

....

Yeah, that was pretty awful.

....

Hm. Maybe I’d go check out whatever Mellie was up to....

But.... one more try with Lasli....?

“This is where the love of my life sleeps. He got attacked by a monster and... He promised...he would always...protect me...”

That’s actually really sad.... and kind of makes me want to draw....

“So... Did you steal it?” or “Sorry for your loss...” My choices.

....

I would excuse myself.

“Sorry for your loss,” I said. I meant it.

“Thanks, I guess.” As her tone strikes like a viper.

I might be back later.

“But next time, try to be a little more sensitive to people you don’t know.”

Okay, maybe I won’t be back later.

“Everyone has their own issues to deal with.”

True, true....

All right. Now for Mellie.

“What is it you want?” she said when I approached her once again.

“Nighttime activities?” I asked.

“At night?” she blanched.

Yes, Mellie?

“So he knows...” she muttered under her breath, “I didn’t think anyone had seen me.”

Then aloud again, “Nighttime, huh? Well, I sleep at night. In my house. On a bed. That’s about it.”

Ah-huh....

Hm, she had nothing else to say after that.

She’d been standing by the plums and had turned right before I reached her.... Maybe.... she had something more to say, but.... now that she was in transit back to her house again I assumed....

....

Maybe I’ll just go check out the woods....

Wait, no, Mellie had gone back to the plums. What was she on about?

I approached her again.

“So you’re still here...” she said, “There’s only one reason to follow around an old woman in the wee hours of the night...”

And then “HELP! I’M BEING ROBBED!

Wait, no that’s not

“Or maybe you’re just bored. Either way, I’m sick of looking at your mug.”

....

Lasli’s story was better.

Under her breath again, “The sun will be up before I know it. Must hurry...”

What was she doing creeping around at this hour?

I wanted to follow her....

But she wasn’t moving....

....

All right. To the woods then.

Oh. There was someone up here by the shrine. It was a Sheikah.

....And I didn’t know his name.

I readied for trouble, but then saw as I drew closer that oh, no, it was just Olkin. That was okay. All right.

Wait what was Olkin doing up here?

I approached him.

“Oh, have you come up here to look at the castle too? I know the light swirling around it is a manifestation of pure evil, but... it’s kind of beautiful.”

This.... adoration for the unholy put me on edge again. This was Olkin.... right? Olkin was a good guy.... right?

He continued, “Although I’m surprised to see so many people up here tonight. I just saw Dorian run off to the hills back there.”

WHAT.

Stay here, Olkin.

“He seemed like he was in a hurry, so I didn’t get a chance to speak with him.”

I was in a hurry now.

I dashed down the path into the woods.... up the hill to the right....

It was after midnight and kind of windy....

Toward the bridge....

It was past two in fact....

!!

Dorian was at the pedestal!

*gasp!* D8

“I know you’re there! Show yourself!” he growled, drawing his blade....

And—*gasp!* A... a big Yiga Man appeared on the pedestal, with his booming, scoffing laugh! Holding his WindCleaver ready.... “You don’t have to shout. I’m right here.”

Oh no was Dorian.... Wasn’t he the one whose wife....?

“So you’re the ones who stole the heirloom!” Dorian said.

What? How did he know?

“Heh... Such anger,” the Yiga scoffed. “It seems this thing is truly special to the fools of this village.”

Dorian....

“Why would you steal it?” Dorian growled again. The Sheikah was so set and ready, but....

“Don’t play dumb, Dorian.”

He knows his name?

“You knew what you were getting yourself into when you decided to leave the organization.”

*gasp*! What? D8

“You forfeited your life the moment you left.”

Oh my gosh....

Dorian....!

“Hnng...” Dorian grunted....

“You did well to tell us about the heirloom,” the Yigaman continued, “Unfortunately, your usefulness has come to an end, as must you. But first...”

The camera turned.... and that dripping Piano....

“It appears we have an audience!”

Oh, he could see me all right.

I stood boldly in the moonlight.

“FOR MY FALLEN MASTER!” he shouted, and came at me—

Oh boy.... Not on your life, pal....

The Master Sword ran out of juice, but I used an Ice Rod to freeze him.... and then finished him with a ThunderBlade....

And he was gone. Done for.

There were no more of them.

It was all right, Dorian.

Black out and back in....

Dorian and I stood in the clearing. The Heirloom on the ground between us.

“I can’t believe I was being followed,” he said.

Good thing for you that you were.

“I’m sure you’ve figured it out, but all of this is my fault... There’s no point in trying to hide it. I am...a member of the Yiga Clan. Or I used to be, anyway.” He grunted as he said it. It was painful for him to say out loud I could tell.

“But then I met the most incredible woman who blessed me with two amazing children.”

It was you.

“And so I tried to change my ways. Tried to leave the clan. But the Yiga... They took my wife’s life as punishment.”

No....

“I couldn’t let them hurt my children, so I used my position as gatekeeper to gather information for the Yiga.”

Dorian....

“I told them about you and about the village in exchange for safety.”

.... It’s a good thing I’m as strong as I am, Dorian.

“But my grief over losing my wife consumed me, and I finally decided to cut ties with the Yiga completely!” His face was set. “I decided I could protect my children from the Yiga. I wasn’t afraid of them. But the Yiga are pure evil.” He was trembling now, fists clenched. “They told me they would kill both Impa and Paya if I didn’t play along!” The quiet orange radiance of the orb lit up his face like a fire.

“Paya figured out that this heirloom is the key to opening an ancient shrine. We weren’t able to make it work, but Paya thinks that maybe you can. Paya...and all of us are devoted to helping you in your quest.”

Oh Dorian....

“Now, please restore this heirloom to its pedestal.”

....

And I did. Finally, finally able at very long last to lay hands on the thing.... just to walk it a few paces, and set it down in the pedestal’s depression.

....

And up came the shrine....

Dorian jumped back!

“The shrine!” he gasped! “So the heirloom WAS the key to opening the shrine. Incredible...”

His eyes were softer now.

“Master Link, I...”

He looked down and away.

“I’m very sorry for all of this.”

....

“I know it’s a selfish request, but do you think you could keep what really happened a secret?”

Dorian.... Of course I can. :)

“I truly don’t deserve mercy, but I don’t want my children, Koko and Cottla, to suffer anymore.”

I don’t want them to either, Dorian.

“I know it doesn’t make up for what I’ve done, but I pledge to protect the village and my family from now on.”

His eyes were raised once more.

“No matter the cost.”

It matters to me. Just you protect your family, Dorian. You’re a good man.

Fade out....

The Stolen Heirloom – Complete

The Lokna Rokee Shrine.

I knew it.

~

Dorian was gone.

I went to see to the shrine....

Ah, and that activation sound was even brighter and stronger than I remembered it....

Lokna Rokee’s Blessing.

And when I came out....

The sun was rising.

I paraglided down into the village.... “Dorian?” as I sailed toward Impa’s house. But only Cado populated. “Cado....”

I about-faced and paraglided back a little bit, touched down, ran up the trail... into the house....

Dorian sat on a stool, bent in half sleep maybe, watching over his children as they slumbered....

“Master Link... I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, so it’s been difficult to sleep well. Same for you, I imagine? Well, in any case, you should get some rest at the inn when you’re tired.”

Will do, buddy. :) Take it easy.

Link’s got your back.

~

My dryer stopped back in the woods. I needed to empty it....

~

.... Now a little over 24 [game-] hours later.... back to talk to Paya....

“Oh Master Link....” She sniffed, her poor shoulders drooping.

“Because I wasn’t there...the heirloom... Our precious Sheikah heirloom...”

My only response.... “Actually...” And I gesticulated....

What?!” Paya said, straightening a bit. “Oh... So that means the heirloom... has finally fulfilled its purpose.”

I nodded. :)

“Thank goodness!” she sighed.

Her eyes softened.

“It doesn’t matter how it happened, so long as the object we have guarded preciously for generations... So long as it was able to help you out in some way, I couldn’t be happier!”

Aw, and she was smiling her cute smile. :) She is actually quite a pretty girl.

“I pray that the protection of the gods of old follows you wherever you go...”

Thank you, Paya.

The scene faded out and back in.

Nothing had changed. Paya still stood near the now vacant platform. Impa still sat on her tower of cushions.

And when I turned to Paya again, she told me to take care. <3

Everything was back to normal. :)

Except....

I noticed later, as I looked in my inventories....

My items....

Ugh....

My deepest pantry pocket where I keep all my fruits and vegetables and bugs and monster bits and bobs and firewood....

Augh

It’s all been.... rearranged!

Now the strange and exotic Hearty Durians were first, instead of the pure and basic Apples.... Nutritional value and effectiveness notwithstanding, it just looked so.... so wrong!

8C

It must have happened in the woods, when I groped for something to eat during the fight against the Yiga....

....

But I was far too many saves ahead now.... to change it. And reliving certain things would....

....

Cutscenes viewed often lose their charm.

....

Dang it.

. . . . . . .

I guess.... that’s one way to get over OCD.
