The Bravest

Waking of Saturday, July 28, 2018 ~ 3

I was still dressed as a vai when I pulled up to the island of rock in the desert sands—the Eastern Lookout Post. I wanted to look around a bit myself first, and found a Gerudo named Sudrey inside. Guess she was there to man the place.
She said she hadn’t expected the Chief would call for the help of someone so.... short.... as I was.
Ouch. XD
Maybe it was this affront to my physique that reminded me to change into something a bit stronger—I ditched the girl clothes, and decked myself out for maximum strength.
Outside the outpost was a ladder up to a high platform. I found Riju up there and spoke to her as the late sun cast everything into red fire.
“So that’s what you really look like,” she said upon seeing me. And I don’t know why it should have, but it took me by surprise—she had only seen me as a vai before then after all!
Riju set to explaining her plan, and I wondered.... Would it be hard and fast with speed on our side, like with Prince Sidon? An approach on foot from a safe distance, and a volley of heavy ranged attacks, like with Yunobo?
What would Riju’s plan be?
Vah Naboris drew energy from the earth through its feet, she explained. If we could disrupt that process, we could subdue it. We would go out by sand seal, Riju wearing the Thunder Helm to protect herself and anyone near her, and I employing Bomb Arrows—Riju supplied these as well, twenty of them—and they would be for Vah Naboris’ feet.
The Divine Beast would rain lightning down on us once we drew near. But if I could stay close enough to Riju I would be safe. However, if at any point I felt it would be better to retreat and regroup, Riju told me not to hesitate to say so.
....So that was it then. Just....

Up close and personal.

We readied our sand seals back down on the ground; I was afforded one of the redder, tamer, faster ones to use. But before we got going, Riju asked me to back up a bit first.
She was wearing the Thunder Helm (which was a little big, she had conceded). But she wore it confidently now and offered aloud an unashamed prayer to her ancestors and the great Champion Urbosa. She called on their aid in her time of need—her people’s time of need—and asked for their protection in the dangerous endeavor we were about to undertake....
And a crackling, shimmering field emanated from the Thunder Helm—pale, energetic yellow—a wide, protective bubble.
And then....
We started.

“Stay close,” Riju had told me, and I tried to now. Our sand seals plunged ahead through ancient ruins and between tottering towers of stone—easy enough to dodge. But it was more difficult to stay inside the Thunder Helm’s protective circle. The conflicted weavings of our passage aside, it seemed that Patricia was slightly faster than my own sand seal....
And then we entered the dust cloud.
Arizona Fog I would have called it.
The horizon vanished, distance disappeared, and we were inside the night.
I could only stay close to Riju; at least she seemed to know where she was going.
What were we doing? We couldn’t see anything, the world had closed around us, we were shooting off into the oblivious blank of an ocean of tiny grit, all the while nearing a Divine Beast that was FREE ROAMING where it would—
Brreep-brreep! Brreep-brreep!
I shut off my shrine detector.
The boundaries of the universe only swirled darkly around us in an impenetrable sphere.
What were we doing?
Chief Riju stopped by the ruin of an ancient stone wall, and I followed suit. The dust thinned a bit and we could see Vah Naboris tromping gigantic through the gloom.
So big....
We started our run—it was so difficult to make my seal keep pace with Patriciatoo far forward, too far back—A chill burst over the screen in a cloud of cold and I switched to my Ruby Circlet—blasted desert climate—The Divine Beast walked, left legs, right legs, left legs, right legs, paying such little regard to two insects like us—but as we pursued after its massive, slow meandering with all our tiny and furious might, we could feel its attack charging and incoming—a powerful, precise reticle centering on my position—my position—come on, seal—and still the Divine Beast walked and we two tiny worms dared to charge closer—
Kra-KKAAOOWwww! Lightning shattered down—but at that very moment I was safe inside the Chief’s protective aura. Nothing happened. We were untouched. Invulnerable.
Excellent.
But it wasn’t always so easy.
I was pulling backward and forward of Chief Riju’s position as if connected to her by a yo-yo. Vah Naboris tromped ahead so slowly, so deliberately—so hugely—I couldn’t keep up unless I made a dash for it with my seal, but Riju held Patricia in reserve—The Divine Beast was gaining
And the lightning loomed again and I had to fall back—and I didn’t always make it.
Kra-KKAAOOWwww!
My hearts vanished by more than half. Gone. In a flash.
Lost my sand seal—it popped up out of the sand a little way ahead and stood still, waiting.
Riju wheeled round and came back to me—the protective field was there.
“Link! Do you want to fall back for now?” Or some such words she said.
But I never gave up.
My stocks were plentiul; a few well-prepared dishes saw me strong and on my feet again—and then it was the rush of reality back in my face as I dashed beyond the Thunder Helm’s protection to reclaim my sand seal once more.
Riju and I charged closer, and closer.... and I fired Bomb Arrow after Bomb Arrow—but I was a poor judge of distance and my shots always came up short—the monumentality of this thinghow far did I have to dash toward it before it stopped growing in my view?
But some of my shots connected—in the rushing, tumbling push-and-pull between me and Riju, I let fly my explosives and two of Vah Naboris’ house-sized feet went darkplease tell me they wouldn’t regenerate if I delayed....
And lightning reduced me to a sizzling heap again.
How many times did it strike me down like that?
Do you want to fall back for now?
No.
This Divine Beast....
This Chief....
What were we doing?
We two humans—well one human, one Gerudo—but she was short enough—but technically I was a Hylian
WE TWO tiny things.
We were using what was at our disposal.
The Chief was using what was at her disposal. And what was at her disposal were sand seals and nerve.
She felt like that shot from the old Xena opening sequence, standing unafraid on the rocky shore and crying defiance at the rising Poseidon, the Force that could crush her in a heartbeat....
We two tiny things.
She was surely the bravest child I had ever met.
Vah Naboris was far away now, but I came back to my sand seal, and we surfed through the dark sand once more, in pursuit.
I stayed close to Riju and waited this time for lightning to strike.... and only after it did, and immediately at that, did I shoot my sand seal forward, stopping for nothing and spurring it onward until I was at the monster’s very feetnot house-sizedHILL-sized—They pounded into the earth all around me, the sand exploded, one step equalled death, and they movedso far and fast they moved at one stride from the beastbut my arrows caught them
Kra-KKAAOOWWwww!
Riju circled to my position and kept me safe until I could regain my feet....
The strategy was sound.... but.... and I had the meals to spare.
One more run waiting for the Divine Beast’s attack to deplete itself of energy, and another mad dash forward.... another brush with ten thousand tons of crushing, beigebronzy death.... Bomb Arrows away....
And the last foot went out, and the mighty Divine Beast Vah Naboris sank to the earth—we had literally brought it to its knees.
....It had the same face as that on the Thunder Helm....
What followed then were some of the most beautifully animated and charged cutscenes I had seen thus far: the two of us, the Chief and I, surging the final distance to the subdued Divine Beast, Link swinging off his sliding shield as his sand seal came to a halt, leaping deftly into a run to join the Chief where she stood, and imparted a few final words.... There was only so much Chief Riju the leader of the Gerudo could do—the rest was up to Link now.  And Link as he hurried to board Vah Naboris.... clinging fingers and toes in a kneeling position to that slanted surface as the beast began to rise again.... I could feel the strain and balance in his muscles oh if he could just hold on....
These were the best cinematics.

In The Breezy Shades Of Night

Waking of Saturday, July 28, 2018 ~ 2

I warped to the southern steps of the Gerudo Highlands to dig into that weapons cache I had found so long ago. Found and then left buried behind a mass of boulders like a big expensive squirrel-horde. Those blades were shiny....
!
I shall call it....
Magpie Rock.
Yes.
Armed with the good stuff, I then warped to Gerudo Town, and proceeded to cook up a few extra meals in one of a couple of unused woks just off the square.
After that....
The only thing left was the Throne Room.
I entered slowly. Buliara was there. But Riju was not. However, the bodyguard informed me that I had been given special permission to visit the Chief in her sleeping quarters, upstairs.
I took the stairs on the left (there were two staircases), and the guard on the halfway landing remarked that the Chief must have thought pretty highly of me, a foreign vai, to be allowed up there.
I continued up to where the staircases met, on an outer balcony overlooking the city. Riju stood there.
“You needn’t say a thing,” she started, “As Chief of my people, I can feel my heirloom’s power radiating from you.”
Or some such words.
She went on to explain that she could feel worry, in the eyes of all her people. She was such a young chief. And to have lost the Thunder Helm in the first place....
It must be hard to have so many expectant eyes upon you.
I handed over the helm, and Riju put it on, then turned to face me.
Her eyes could not be seen; the helm seemed more like a mask. Six embossed tendrils sprang over the front before ending in little blue-jeweled spots like eyes, gleaming in two columns of three apiece. The ornamental vertical halo cresting the back radiated with lightning motifs.
“Well, how do I look?” she asked.
Like a spider, I thought, and lost myself to memory....

Vah Naboris towered still and quiet in the desert of the night. Link’s tiny figure walked across one of its expansive decks, toward a low huddle of.... nondescript humanity....
Then the camera caught up and took better note, and I saw the Champion Urbosa turn her head slightly at my approach, and take the most.... beautifully animated regard of me as I drew near.
But she moved softly, and spoke more softly still—she wasn’t alone where she sat on the deck, on a makeshift throw of rug and pillow. Princess Zelda leaned, dead asleep, against her left side.
“Well you got here fast,” Urbosa said to me, “She’s been out on a survey all day today.”
What did Urbosa ask me then? Whether I noticed something in the princess? The exhaustion? The frustration? I don’t remember.... and because I was Link, I didn’t answer either.
“Your silence speaks volumes,” said Urbosa.
Hurr. |D
She went on to explain, in her low and lilting voice, how the Princess just got frustrated whenever she saw me wearing that sword on my back. “Don’t worry, it’s not as if you have any fault in any of this,” she added. Or some such words.
The Princess had just been working so hard.... “She once passed out in the freezing waters searching for this sealing power,” Urbosa said, “That’s the kind of motivation that drives her research.” The Gerudo stroked the little Hylian lightly on the cheek. “She really is special.”
And yet she felt like a failure....
Hhhh.... why? I didn’t understand....
“The night brings a chill; it’s time we bring her in,” said Urbosa, but then she paused. “Or....” she said, this singular floating conjunction running a rogue operation outside the ever-present text-boxes.... what?
And rising in Urbosa’s green eyes came a light just as mischievous....
What...? o__o
Urbosa extended her right arm out toward the desert.... and snapped her fingers.
The sound came loud and crisp in the silence before being immediately dwarfed by the shattering Kra-KAOWWww of a bolt of lightning! Right out in the desert next to us!
Zelda gasped and sat bolt upright. “What was that?” she panted, “Urbosa? Did you feel that?”
And as she turned about on the rug her eyes fell on me.
“What are you doing here?” she shrieked. She sounded embarrassed.
But Urbosa threw back her head and let out a low and HEARTY laugh.... for honorary contralto points.... while Zelda’s head continued to spin between the two of us....

“What?” said Riju, “You’re just staring...”
There were two choices. I tried to be nice, and said, “It looks good!” ....instead of “It’s a little big...”
Riju smiled.... and shifted the large helmet to a more secure position as she moved her head.
The Chief aimed to stop the Divine Beast. She had researched its power, and confided to me that her people would be entirely helpless if it made it to the town.... And she once again asked for my aid. “Will you help me?” she said.
Sometimes I feel like the contrast between the yes-answers and the no-answers can be a little bit extreme. That wasn’t quite the steady, manly, heroic response I felt like giving, but.... I wasn’t gonna leave this girl in the dust.
“I will!” I said.
And Riju gave a shaky laugh, “Who knew that just a simple, confident pledge of support from you was all I needed to set my mind at ease?”
Heh, she could disguise it so well, though.... Even so, that felt good. <3
Chief Riju asked me to meet her at the Lookout Post, east of town. “Take a sand seal,” she advised, “You can get in some practice with them that way.”
And so I did....

. . . .

But not before I gave myself a proper tour of the Chief’s bedroom. Oh my gosh so many cartoon sand seal prints everywhere and the stuffed sand seals on her bed were so cute!!

Link The Physical

Waking of Saturday, June 2, 2018 ~ 2

TO BUSINESS....
David’s ahead of me. But I would show him something he’d never done. Something I’d never done either, to be honest, but....
Well, I had faith it was possible.
Actualy.... I knew it was possible!
I’d become quite practiced at avoiding spoilerish images on the internet, but.... I recalled catching it in one YouTube thumbnail I had seen.... it had been pretty striking....
Also I’d heard tell from my Compendium that it was a thing that you could do.
As I ran from the Wetland Stable toward the Honeydell (and saved Leekah again), I felt appropriate in rather recreating what I had glimpsed in that thumbnail, and started stripping off my clothes. I left a rugged-looking spear on my back, though. And so, looking a proper barbarian, I came to the edge of the dell and peered down. The rain made it difficult to see, but there were unmistakably two bears down there.
That.... could complicate matters. I was hardly sure I could handle one bear—how could I be sure the other wouldn’t attack me while I was at it?
As I hemmed and hawed, shirtless Link did something I’d never seen him do before—seemed the programmers had added a new stance dance move....
Suddenly I saw his arms rise slowly up from his sides, straight out—I swung the camera around him to see what he was on about....
And then flex! He regarded one bicep, and then with a slight shift in posture turned his head to admire the other.
Oh my gosh! XD Oh I laughed so much at that.... XD XD XD
Well, eventually one bear ran off, but the remaining one wouldn’t come out of the cave. I couldn’t deal with it like that....
And then that one suddenly ran off too, and I was bearless.
Eh, as it was night, I returned to the Wetland Stable and rested until the morning. Whereupon I gave Honeydell another go, but there were no bears.
Hmph.
So I tried Shadow Pass. I’d seen a bear in there before. And my Compendium said they could be found in the Akkala Highlands. But when I got there all I found was a wolf.
I bounced between the two for a while, Honeydell and Shadow Pass, but with no luck—just a really bad encounter with an electric Keese in the rain—NEVER AGAIN—
And.... David had stepped out again anyway, so.... I decided to hunt some more Guardians in the meanwhile.
Back to Lomei Labyrinth. I killed the Crawler. I killed the maze-lurker. And then.... it was time to revisit the dread basement.
When I floated down this time.... they all could see me coming! I sailed quickly behind the giant pillar by the entrance....
Four Decayed Guardians in the room. That’s how many lasers there had been. I peeked round the pillar’s edge until one of them saw me.
Hoo. I could do this.
I stepped out again, its laser found me, the Piano got restless, and I had to time my parry very carefully this time—the Guardians’ laserbolts were fast, but they still took time to traverse the yards between us. A very short time....
But I whacked it back across the room nonetheless, and that Guardian exploded. Excellent!
On to the next!
I killed the four Decayed ones that way, peeping round the pillar. But there were two Stalkers left. And for those ones all I could do was . . . . well walk up to them as surely as I might, until they came to life.
Sparks and embers rained from the ceiling where the lightning struck on the maze’s rainy surface.
I almost had to come right up between the splay of their spider legs before they’d finally wake up.
Ughuhuh.
But I did it. Twice. And the swell of Strings carried me through the maniacal Piano, and presently every threat was eliminated, and I....
I HAD CLEANED THE BASEMENT.
And its yield brought me up to twenty-three gears! ^_^
HUH! After this, that thing I wanted to show David would surely pose no problem at all!
I warped back to the Wetland, and luck was on my side: the day was fair, and only one bear prowled in the Honeydell, and that well away from the cave.
David wasn’t there, but.... I knew he would be shortly.
Switching once again to my Nature Boy outfit, I leapt off the edge as silently as I could, and paraglided down in a calculated sail toward the bear . . . it was so big up close.
It sensed me just before I landed on its back, and then started jumping and rearing, trying to throw me off....
My stamina is greater than it has been—two full wheels.
And with it I was able to hold on.... and soothe the bear.
After only a moment it stood still, and only rocked in its lumbering animal stance dance beneath me.
Oh my gosh I tamed a bear! XD
And I got it to walk! :D I headed toward the road....
I’d seen David ride a deer at a walk before, but when he had tried to give it a spur it had bucked him off.
Could I get the bear to go faster than a walk? Safely at least?
But I was content to just go lumbering forward for the moment. It was such a big animal—and its tail was quite as fluffy as a rabbit’s!
As I neared the way out of the dell, the bear roared and tried to throw me off again, but I was able to soothe it once more.
It was around this time that David entered the room.
“....Why are you riding a bear?” he said flatly.
“Well that’s not the reaction I was hoping for!” I said, “Have you ever ridden a bear?”
“No,” he laughed.
But I was glad that I seemed to have thoroughly captured his attentions with the spectacle for the moment. ^_^
Spectacled.... Spectacled bear.
LOL.
I asked him about spurring his deer before, and then.... decided to try it on the bear. I hit A
And the bear started into a great burly lope! It ran down the road! With me on its back! Oh my gosh! XD XD
At whiles it would get tired of me and grunt and roar, but I was able to get it all the way back to the Wetland Stable.
And I wondered....
The more attentive denizens of the stable all cowered and whimpered at my approach—even Kass siffened and looked at me with some pause, his accordion momentarily forgotten. But Lawdon (whom I’d been giving a lot of business to lately) said automatically when I rode up, “Well, looks like you’ve caught yourself a new steed! Would you like to register it?”
“Yes, please!”
“Understoo— Uh...”
And then he looked at my big new mount.
“Oh for the love of Hylia... That’s not a horse!”
XD XD XD XD
“We only board horses here, no exceptions,” he told me.
XD XD XD XD XD XD XD
Oh that was PRECIOUS! ^_^
Ah!
Delightful. > u <
Agh well I figured I’d dealt with the poor bear for long enough at that point. But when I thought about dismounting.... I wasn’t sure he wouldn’t go savaging all the people standing around.
So I rode him back home.
It was rather terrifying and alarming every time he tried to buck me off. And I wondered if, when I let him go.... he’d turn on me and I’d have to kill him.
I equipped something a bit stronger than my scary-looking Nature Boy spear, just in case. But when I got off, we just ran our separate ways from each other.
Heh. Cool.
I rode a bear! ^_^

Sweaty Palms

Waking of Saturday, April 15, 2017

“I found Gorignak,” said David.
I just said, “Ah!” and we looked at each other for a moment, both of us knowing I was afraid of spoilers—from either end.
“It’s probably the same one you found,” David said, “I’m pretty sure.” The words were so confidently weighted.
I still didn’t say anything.
“Where did you find yours?” he pressed, “It’s fine.”
“....The South Dueling Peak,” I finally said, “Just below the frost line.”
“Yeah. That’s where I found it.”
“And it asploded into a million Ambers.”
“Yup.”
“You know,” I went on, “I remember coming upon that field, and thinking This just LOOKS like a place for a boss fight....”
David laughed.
He’s ahead of me in the game I think. Sometimes I’ll come in the door and hear things I know I shouldn’t be hearing, whereupon I’ll plug my ears and dash away to my room. Other times I have to occupy the same space out of necessity, making a lunch or something, and I’ll just refrain from looking at the TV, and he’ll keep from initiating any important cutscenes. It’s easy enough, until David starts reacting in blustering whattheheckitude at whatever he is seeing.
At one such time I stood where I could not see the TV, just David’s face. He’d just ascended some kind of big, bald, sand-stony mountain I think, and from the sounds he made and the faces he pulled, you’d think he’d just come upon a giant marble statue of Tingle.
“Gold, actually,” he said.
“Gold statue of Tingle?”
“Yes.”
It’s.... maddening.
“I really want to watch you play this part when you get here,” he told me.
Sometimes I’ll watch him play, but only when he’s in places I’ve already been.
I saw him climbing around Zora’s Domain. Ralis Pond, actually! He barely saw the Hinox in time before blundering into it (it was raining). He climbed all over until he paraglided down onto the bridge and into the Domain proper.
And Rivan and Dunma were the first Zoras he had ever laid eyes on.
What?” I was incredulous. “HOW? How did you even—? Where did you even come from?”
“The south,” David said, “It took me a really.... REALLY long time.”
I told him I’d let him watch me play that other part, if some day he would show me just how in the world he made it all the way into the heart of Zora’s Domain without bumping into any Zora.
And he had to climb down to get to the Lanayru Tower, because he had never even been to the wetlands.
What in the.... just.... ?
One thing I was sad about for him though was that once he did climb Lanayru Tower, Gruve was not at the top. He didn’t get to see that little exchange. Pity.
Sometimes I’ll watch him play even when he’s just near enough to places I’ve already explored.
I saw him sail far out to an island off the coast near Hateno Village once.
(That was probably when I developed Korok Leaf Envy.)
But ah, what another charming animation we found there—have you ever tried to kick open a treasure chest when you have no shoes on your feet?
Oh dear me. Poor Link! X-)
Made us laugh something grand.
We try not to spoil each other, but we’re okay with giving each other little hints, I think. There were electric green chuchus on that island—the first I’d seen in the game—and I passed on Joseph’s warning that those kind blow up. David appreciated that. He also was glad for the tip I gave him on just setting bombs down beside those hidden land-bound octoroks, and then backing up and blowing them up once they show their ugly faces.
And of course I was happy for the extra brainstorming he offered when I was stuck inside Vah Ruta.... and a few shrines....
But there is one thing he always—
Actually there are probably a lot of things he makes fun of me for.
But there is one thing so constant, that his opportunities to poke fun at me for it are far more numerous than the rest, and that is that.... sometimes when I play the game, my palms sweat more profusely than they’ve ever done before in my LIFE.
As a matter of fact, after I started the game, my palms seemed to oversweat wherever I was—for like two weeks straight. Probably longer.
I did feel slightly vindicated once he started his game file, and said to me at one point as he scaled a giant cliff face, “I can see why your hands sweat.”
But he still digs me for it when I get it going bad.
Very occasionally, my father has seen me play this game. And simply due to the law of averages, he’s therefore seen my hands sweat too.
I’ll keep pausing and apologizing for no reason as I wipe my palms down on my sleeves or the front of my shirt....
And Dad will always say “We’ll have to get you some flight gloves.”
And I’ll laugh.

Or.... that’s how it used to go.

Because on this day, Dad made sure to watch me, and beckon me, as I came up and looked at the entertainment center cupboard where my WiiU lives. Because he wanted to see how I would react. Because there draped over the cupboard door were two long green flight gloves.
What?” I laughed. :D
“Those are for you!” he smiled.
What the heck??” I laughed some more.
“Try ‘em on! They’re brand new.”
I did.
“Oh they fit great. You look awesome.”
“Where did you even get these?”
“At the store where helicopter pilots know to look for flight gloves.”
What the heck, Dad?” XD XD
We hugged.
The flight gloves happened to match the mud-green T-shirt I’d been wearing.
And they came halfway up my forearms.
I felt like a superhero.
He used to do a lot of search and rescue, Dad did.

Maybe that’s why.... I’d been trying so long.... so hard....

Had it somehow become.... a familial trait?

Was it just something in my blood?

The Forest

Waking of Friday, April 14, 2017 ~ 9

You know, I really enjoy the little stance dance Link does whenever you leave the controller alone for too long. In Ocarina of Time it was the dirt-removal toe-tapping or the infamous tunic-straightening. I’ve seen him sneeze when he’s cold in Majora’s Mask, or swing some moves with the sword in his hand. He would stretch long and luxuriously in Wind Waker, or just take a rest on his haunches when he was a wolf in Twilight Princess. There are dozens of these idle animations.
But in Breath of the Wild.... he just nods off. XD His eyes glaze over and his mouth starts to sag until his head drops a little too suddenly and he shakes himself out of it with a hilariously surprised look on his face!
Ahh delightful animations in this game....

Well.
I’d seen what I had come to see at this tower.
When day broke with a clear sky, I jumped from the top and paraglided toward the road that led to the woods. That old man at the Woodland Stable had said something about the Lost Woods in the heart of the forest.... I would plunge ahead in a minor exploratory sweep until I ran into something too dangerous to face—which I was sure would inevitably happen—whereupon I could simply warp back to Zora’s Domain, and Upland Zorana. Robbie was waiting.
Maybe Karson would react to that pictograph of Tye and Sorelia....
The trees were thick along the road. I followed it until I came to a narrow pass between two sheer hills. Like a canyon.
The overwhelming sense of caution coursed through my veins and filled my lungs, and the bold exploratory sweep was promptly forgotten.
I chose the hill on the right side; it seemed to offer access to even higher foothills....
But up on its grassy top, between the tree trunks, I saw something I had not seen before: lean grey shapes with tufted tails. Canine. Two, no, three, no there were more of them—
Wolves.
I turned right back around. Perhaps the hill on the left would offer me something better.
It did. It was quite clear. However, it was too far away from the right hilltop for me to spy out what creatures might have been lurking there....
Or snipe them.
Drats.
Well, I had a look around anyway.
This Great Hyrule Forest was.... interesting. It seemed completely misted over with a thick, thick fog. The trees looked dead. And far away in its very heart, one tree stood supremely huge above them all. It looked.... like a giant cherry tree....
So many dead limbs with no leaves growing on them made it seem easier to see in there. And yet.... the tangle of it all seemed dangerous....
Was Hestu in there somewhere?
Ugh, but did I really want to go in there?
Wait, but I’d been planning to, hadn’t I?
And couldn’t I just warp away if anything happened?
Then why couldn’t I make myself move?
I surveyed the surrounding landscape a bit instead; the hill was tall enough to give me some fairly good views. I looked behind me and could see the tower I had scaled, standing amid all the platforms in the little circle of the bog—
WAIT A SECOND.

A Familiar Face

Waking of Wednesday, March 29, 2017 ~ 4

The girl slowed to a walk.
I doubted another Yiga would venture this close to civilized folk, and I spoke to her.
Her name was Leekah, and she thanked me for my help on the road. She even said she felt less anxious with me around, and I thanked her; that felt good.
Once I had seen her safely into the glow of the Woodland Stable, I turned back to the tall, bobbing figure across the road.
I ran to meet him.
SHALAKA?? he exclaimed at the sight of me. He was happy to see me, and I to see him. ^_^
What is “shalaka”? Just some snatch of Korok-ese, I imagine. Either that or he just likes to scat. He does sing a bit when he works his magic on my carrying capacity. In fact he sings a very recognizable little tune every time that just makes me grin and tickles me no end....
Before, when he had allowed me to carry two more weapons, he had done a little dance with his special maracas, and it had ended with a little bang like a cheap firecracker and a small shower of scarlet confetti.
It was quite adorable, really. :3
But this time, as I asked him to allow me to carry more bows, he did his dance, but the confetti came out green.
Oh, I thought, perhaps it’s some kind of evolution his character goes through throughout the course of the game. Do his upgrades become more powerful or something?
But then I asked for more shields, and the confetti turned blue!
Why! Those were the Triforce colors! Red for Power, Green for Courage, and Blue for Wisdom.
And I pondered.... Yes, those two weapons.... the weapons in general.... those were definitely a symbol of Power.... employed to inflict your force upon those you deem fit to slay. That was Red.
And the shields.... Protection. Cover and safekeeping. Giving yourself a safe space. You can’t do anything in there, but it buys you time.... time to formulate.... time to think.... A bubble of relative calm and quiet. That could be the Blue of Wisdom perhaps....?
But what about Courage and the bows?
That sounds like a band.... formed by skull kids maybe.... a very juvenile boy band, yes....
*COUGH* What about Courage and the bows?
Well it’s definitely a weaker weapon than the forceful blades you could be using.... Huh but.... archery kind of like sniping.... while hiding....
Well that seems rather cowardly, doesn’t it? :(
But it’s not like I hide every time I use a bow....
Maybe just the thought of it being a weaker weapon.... but still a weapon nonetheless. It can’t rely on great overwhelming force and you can’t use a shield while you hold it, but it can still do something. That’s got to take some of the Green of Courage, hasn’t it?

It was a bow that quieted Vah Ruta.

....
Maybe I did use to be a great archer.
Mister Hestu allowed me a few more trades this time. They got more expensive per carrying-type as they went on, but I had plenty of Korok seeds.
But after a time, he looked up with a jolt, and said he thought he might remember his way back home after all! (He’d been a bit lost, you see.) He also said something about his father or grandfather might be waiting for him.... I do wonder if I’ll ever find his home, or meet his family....
We parted ways, and I turned toward the little pond by the stable.
There was a shrine there, and I had come a long way.
The pounding rain finally let up as I passed a sodden open-air dining area or deck of some kind, and I made my way beneath a high cliff, along a narrow bank toward the shrine.
Two stalizalfos popped out of the ground and I slashed them both to bits, killing one with my blade, and taking the other’s skull-head and punting it into the water, which felt AMAZING.
And in I went, into the shrine of Mirro Shaz.
I said it was SIMPLE, I never said it was easy!” – The Witch of the Walls, Legend of Zelda cartoon
I think I must always have had some kind of soft spot for Bob Forward....
I broke a few weapons, hounding after the prizes of Mirro Shaz, the tricksy devil.... That very last hidden one was an arduous exercise in math, science, physics and athletic precision. And patience. At one point, wanting to go faster and hitting the wrong button too soon, I caught the wrong end of Ja Baij’s gift point blank and blew myself across the room.
Have I mentioned yet how beautiful the animation is of Link sent flying?
He looks like what a person would look like, as the poor guy rolls to a dazed and dizzied stop.
Very lovely. Very fluid.
Very painful. -__-;
Weapons shattered, numbers mounted in my skull, hearts were lost, but it was worth it, getting that final chest behind the last barred door.
I wonder what Purah would make of a Giant Ancient Core.

It wasn’t until later that I wondered what the stable folk might have thought of me as I jabbered away to the empty rain.... since most people can’t see Koroks it seems. I’d forgotten.
