CALAMITY

Evening of Wednesday, June 19, 2019 (comprised of many raw note editings from May 1 through May 10, 2023 that I really hope sound consistent because I left it alone for too long) ~ 3

CALAMITY

.......

....

.

.

.

.

The Demon lay on the floor, its figure still, but its form yet crawlingMalice writhing beneath the surface, across the surface, still obscuring the monster in a pall of unknowableness among its folded, gangling legs bent everywhere—

But it stirred again.

Leg and arm and limb and joint moved, shuffling as the heaving mass hauled and pulled to raise itself—tromp, tromp.... tromp-tromp, tromp.... the varied ends of its nightmare legs squelched against the floor. Dark blood or some perversion thereof came spurting from every surface at the strain, spattering the ground—Shkang!—one Guardian leg clamped against the ground. A literal Guardian’s leg. This dark amalgamation of terrors....

It burbled a sonorous, crocodilian rumbling as it pulled to face me.

The giant flaming sword arm, no longer roaring, heaved up and pounded mightily down as the Demon dragged, shaking the floor.

Its eyes still clutched my throat to strangle the life from me.

The smaller left arm stepped once more and then buckled—the shoulder collapsed—something ruptured and a torrent of black-magenta liquid shot out—from the neck, from the belly, the hindquarter, the other side, again and again, more and more—the Demon screamed, rearing as dark, splattering pools formed viscous and foul over the stones beneath its wilting body—

It didn’t stop—more kept coming.... and more kept coming.... spurting.... SPURTING....

The Demon’s head rolled in a moment of silent, open-mouthed agony, like a dying man’s, and its terrible eyes, like fiery glowing holes, looked on me again.... One of them was fixed wider than the other....

And then the screaming came again, as the monster lurched more viciously than before, pulling the stones beneath it with ungodly strength as its liquid muscles glowed hot and red in its rage. Pounding, pounding, dragging, pulling, screaming, reaching—

The jaws of Hell gaped in its face as it came toward me.

And then came the light.

It was not a goodly light.

It erupted purple-white from within the Demon’s body, spearing out in a piercing shaft—and then another—and then another. At each new beam the Demon’s screams seemed to redouble, layering up upon themselves. A cacophonous teakettle chorus of pain, and rage, and hatred—

Until at last its body could no longer maintain its corporeal form, and all was blasted out, ripped apart from within, by that glowing hot, purple-white sphere like a firebomb....

The dark wind of a boundless evil rolled over me like a gale, rushing out from the center in a wrack of malevolent black flame. I cast up my forearms and lowered my brow, planting my feet against the storm. So much of it.... so much bigger than even that foul, indiscernible thing I had just killed.... I bowed my head lower....

When the rupturing Malice-storm had finally blown itself out, the dark-glistening clouds of it gathered up into the center of the enormous chamber once more.

The beast had no form.... yet it was no less present.... somehow roaring in gurgling fury even now....

The dark cloud swirled menacingly for only a moment more.... and then began to float back up—to ascend back up the central shaft, moving with purpose, another roar guttering in its unmade throat like a dragon....

It was leaving me behind—I had a bad feeling about this.

The Calamity was leaving; everything was leaving—even the Soundtrack had gone. The room stood stock-still and empty. The glik-glik-glik of my boots and the rattle of my gear rang in the hollow space as I jogged a few steps after the departing nightmare.

How do I get out of here?

But even as I stood, gazing upward—that flickering, that glittering—

The Powers of Light and Goodness had not left me bereft. Just as in the times after I had reclaimed a Divine Beast, that delicately twinkling golden light began to gather around my person like living stars, humming like summer crickets and tiny cymbals....

It enveloped me all at once with a high clarion ringing, and bore me up and away as the world whited out....

....

Hyrule Field.

That’s where this was.

Flat, and open, and grassy, and I could see the Castle and those pillars in the distance, blackened to near silhouettes in the golden sun’s glare.

....

No, but was it even called Hyrule Field, here, now?

These Central Plains....

The breezing grass and the lightly scudded sky mirrored fire at one another, as the flickering light descended like a flower petal and deposited me in the field with a flash, soft, and unassuming, ringing like a kiss from the Goddess.

A horse.

A horse was here with me, too. Saddled. Its figure likewise lost in the glow of the molten sky. Brown? It looked liked Brown. But.... Brown was safe in a stable....

The horse from my memories, resurrected?

....

They did look very similar to one another, to be honest. I wondered....

The wind hissed among the grass.

No.... Not the wind....

Streaming tails of Malice coursed through the sky like tadpoles distorted by rippling water. Sickly fireworks, with heads of bright magenta, trailing ribbons of dark fumes behind them.

They slithered over my head, behind me—

Hissing....

“...” Something muffled.

I turned—and saw darkness—

Ganon...”

The horse turned too—

—It was black, it was swirling, it was a mountain, darkly flaming, writhing and turning as it had done about the castle for a hundred years.... only so much thicker.... Shot with magenta, and fed by a thousand trailing vestiges of Evil as the Demon’s scattered Malice gathered for one final time....

“Ganon...”

It was Zelda’s voice.

“Ganon was born out of a dark past.”

Shapes. Shapes moved in the dimness of the cloud. Solid again. Something big....

What.... rolling mountain of evil-made-flesh was this? I didn’t understand.

“He is a pure embodiment of the ancient evil that is reborn time and time again...”

And anotherSHAPE?

!!

THAT one I understood—that was a hoof.

It burst from the cloud and swung ponderously downward. A sound like cracking trees and tearing rocks snapped through the air as the cloven mountain of Malice came to a sudden and violent stop, quaking the earth.

And another hoof.... It tore through the cloud with a shearing, the inverted mountain peaks of its dew claws dragging dark contrails through the air. Every new disturbance to the swirling miasma cast up a blood-red splash as the Demon churned within itself, birthing the new, unholy body.

Oh gosh he’s huge....

“He has given up on reincarnation and assumed his pure, enraged form.”

The head at last erupted from the storm.

Fire.

Crests of white fire.

Evil so concentrated it glowed a blinding burning—

The eye. Horns. Tusks. The mouth gaping like I had seen it do so long ago from the plateau when I was tiny and small and naked. Roaring fit to split its jaws apart and fill all the earth with its howling, its raging....

The ground disappeared in a haze before and beneath it, so towered the Demon over the plains below, the vestigial clouds of the evil that had fed its formation still whirling round it in a disc.

Oh my gosh he’s huge....

“If set free upon our world, the destruction will be unlike anything ever seen before.”

The hooves raised unnaturally high—

From where I stood by my horse, I watched—we watched—as the whole, mutated, broad-shouldered mountain of the Beast came slamming down from the final throes of its transformation. The forehooves landing bowshots apart. Casting up house-sized boulders that rocketed into the air—my horse reared and whinnied—

The Malicey clouds at last receded.

The Demon was whole once more.

And its eyes—its glowing, hollow eyes—set amid the animal patterns of the manes of fire cresting its face and flaring up along the proud hump of its back—

Its eyes.... were upon me.

Me. Alone in all the plain.

Me.... and my horse.

Hardly moving from his enormous, tusk-lowering stoop, the Calamity again sighed out the guttering roar of a thousand crocodile dragons—and a quivering, a shaking, racked along his thick, muscly nape, rippling among his shoulders and down through his neck and into the terrible place where his eyes lived—unmoving, unmoved, unwrinkled by any furrow of the brow—only the massive, man-splitting strain of that monumental trembling betraying the awful fury that no mortal could utter and live.

A new title gleamed into terrible focus on the screen:

Hatred and Malice Incarnate

DARK BEAST GANON

Even the title seemed tinged with blood....

The entirety of the Orchestra had risen up through just one earth-shattering sequence of that most ancient organ motif, before coming to hang with the dust in the air on a suspension of high strings that were bending with losing their minds.... watching.... waiting....

That dissonant, ascending organ line.

He was still serenading her.

Still serenading his captive.

But the Dreadful Dialogue pendulated back, as it always did and as it always had, and the Princess’ answering Lullaby came escorted by the Piano alone, standing against the world in a beautiful concerto beneath the rippling sky flowing like a river....

Something was there, like a second sun high above....

She addressed me still—

“I entrust you with the Bow of Light—a powerful weapon in the face of evil.”

And the holy relic descended from the washing pastel of the running clouds, glowing golden, beaming bright, the recurve of its length arcing like a sickle moon decked with gold-wrought tendrils.... sheening.... ringing....

“Link...”

I stood in the grass beside my horse.

“...you may not yet be at a point where you have fully recovered your power or all of your memories...”

Looking down from the easy gaze he had held on the Princess’ final gift, my horse.... looked to me now. Expectantly.

And I looked to him.

And mounted up.

And the Piano reached out with one hand and then the other, drawing in every piece of the Orchestra one by one, stronger and stronger as the Lullaby turned to a new melody.

The oldest new melody in this land....

“But courage need not be remembered...”

The Calamity stomped in the distance beneath the mighty cadence—

“For it is never forgotten.”

Oh my gosh I’m gonna cry.

The Bow finally came down to near ground level, some distance away.... and beyond it, the thunder and terror and roaring of a thousand crumbling mountains echoed from the Calamity’s last raging.

Only the Princess’ Light separated us now.

The cutscene released.

I charged.

Thankfully the pick-up was automatic as soon as we galloped into the Bow Of Light

And after one FINAL interruption from the You-Get-The-Thing fanfare—oh my, 32 damage times five; that was something—the freeze released us and we hoofed it into the grass.

Oh gosh....

Oh my gosh he’s huge.

He’s HUGE.

Oh gosh.

I took a shot.

But nothing happened.

Oh wrong bow, I was still holding the old one—

I switched out—

A winding, whistling, charging noise and light gathered about the Beast’s head like a collapsing star and then ERUPTED OUT OF ITS MOUTH IN A PIERCING BEAM. Great head bowed low he mowed the blast into the ground, melting the earth and evaporating the grass—and then raised his tremendous neck, arcing the beam along with it, carving a straight line into the ground and off to the horizon and up into the sky and beyond the clouds and high into the heavens—shooting—shooting—SHOOTING!—the earth flaming a raging magenta in the beam’s wake—

Oh my gosh!

“That energy covering Ganon’s body is called Malice. None of your attacks will get through as he now is...”

Good to know!

The Demon charged another blast to spew out upon the earth—was he seeking me out?—My horse and I galloped along his flank, away from his head....

Or was he only blindly blasting his rage wherever he could as it welled up within him?

....

Either way, I didn’t care to invite his attentions!

I spurred my horse onward in the general direction of the Beast’s hindquarters, carving a wide arc and a generous berth....

“I will hold the Malice back as much as I can, but my power is waning.”

Princess!

“Attack any glowing points that you see!”

The Piano bucked like a wild thing among the Orchestra—

“May you be victorious!” the Princess prayed.

I spurred my horse....

Glowing points? His face? His eyes?

But the Princess willed her targets into sight for me—enormous golden rings, overlaid by the sign of the holy Triforce, rang into being across the Demon’s side, glowing hot and shining....!

“Go!” she cried—

OH GANON TURNED—his feet—HIS FEET—!

One deadly fetlock shuffed out and knocked me and my horse to the ground—

He stepped on my horse!

He stepped on my horse!!

I never meant to get this close—

He was MADE—OF—MALICE.

We must not touch him!

I drew back on the Bow of Light—this....Arrow of Light!—and let fly—

The golden targets exploded, and though I could discern no change in the Demon’s ungodly evil hide, I could hear his thunderous roaring in response, and see the impossible writhing of his heaving, mountainous body—it hurt him—

“Ganon’s power is weakening!”

I whistled and my horse was there.

Such a faithful, faithful steed.

Two whipcracks. Came every time I whistled.

Mounting was easier and the horse would run straight away. A mechanic, I suspected, of the fight.... But he was tricky to steer, as the camera wanted to stay focused on Ganon—

“Quickly now!”

More targets—

I’m coming!

The PIANO.

The Piano had accompanied me on horseback before.

It had followed me through the gaiety of sunshine and dappled leaves. It had stalked me lost beneath the moonlight. It had run joyously at my side telling me the Old Stories of Zelda’s Lullaby and the Legend of the Hero—

But now—

Now in the Calamity’s shadow, my horse and I ran to the tune of This Hyrule’s oldest song:

5_ 1_ 8____ 7b_ 5____....

5_ 7b_ 1____ 5_ 2b_ 3b__ 4__

5_ 1_ 3b____ 2_ 5____....

5__ 7b_ 6___ 5____

This melody was ancient on a metaphysical level—already old and well known in teasers before the land had been born. And it strove against the Ascending Organ of the Dark One as the Malice-fires raged and the rain began to pour....

This was the Orchestra’s pronouncement for the Battle at the End of the World.

But the Piano....

Upon this framework....

....the Piano danced!

So vibrant, so vivacious, it leapt and spun and stomped and beat and CARED NOTHING for all of Ganon’s raging! It was there to chant. It moved in syncopated defiance of everything around it, Good, Evil, or otherwise. It wanted a piece of this brawl and it had taken it, and was now tearing it to pieces before the eyes and ears of all.

Always mere raindrops it had been before, whenever it ran alongside my horse—Now it was a hurricane!a torrential downpour splashing and crashing where it would and NONE could stop its rioting revelry!

My heart could have burst for that PIANO....!

As it burst for my horse!

Would he stop stepping on my horse!!

I had to shoot the thingies....!

Zelda’s voice telling me what to do.... I could sense it starting to deteriorate into the variations reserved for the retarded gamers because I was taking so long—

“Link, now!”

Hang on I’m still over here by his tail—

!

But then I remembered.... and didn’t want to miss another opportunity....

I took out my pictograph box!

Channeling a stupidly fond old memory from one Adam Hanny and his friend Shad Metcalf.... “Here’s a nice picture for ya!” I sneered with a nasty grin, and took a pictograph of Dark Beast Ganon’s butt.

I was a little preoccupied to do any better just now!

Shoot the thingies....

Some of the targets I had missed while being on one side of him, before passing round to the other side—he was just so big.... his flanks and shoulders heaving and twisting like a mountain....

The Princess’ urgings made me want to hurry.... Sometimes I passed underneath him to get back to where I had been.... oh gosh....

And once as I came out on his right side, A BLOOD MOON WAS RISING AND THE SKY WAS TURNING HELLISH RED.

The clouds, the storm, and now this....

The sky was boiling.

Princess Zelda conjured the final target for me—ON HIS BELLY.

Well, I’d been under a few times already....!

I rode in close again and took it out!

“Link! Look up there!” Zelda’s voice came again.

But I was wheeling around toward the tail again. I didn’t like being anywhere near the Beast’s face. His ripping Malice attacks raking across the landscape—

“That is the very core of Ganon’s being!”

Or some such words....

“Do what you must, Link!”

But I’m looking up and I don’t see anything....

Oh—

I could see now, more light—ohh gosh—from his head now, what?

....

. . . . . . .

. . . .

I gotta get up there.

....

I gotta get up there. Up to the front.

And the fastest way....

I turned my horse and rode straight up his tail, between his back legs, under his gross heaving belly and beneath his.... unexpectedly ripped chest.... toward the front.

“I DON’T LIKE BEING DOWN HERE,” I SAID TO MY MOM.

What the abs?

I guessed he wasn’t totally porcine.

My horse and I tore out from beneath his terrible jaws—the searing firebomb waiting to go off—

We got to the front and I could see now—a light.

A good light!

Golden and sheening, bursting from his head, from above his face, from his nape, out of his manes....

The sight of it hummed and shimmered—the Piano had seized upon a single oboe and was now romancing it about the field in an elegantly charged holding pattern—it wanted me to do something....

“Use his attacks to your advantage!” the Princess sang out.

His attacks....

His attacks....?

....

HIS ATTACKS?

She didn’t mean....?

The Light was so high up.... The Beast was too tall.... There was no reaching it....

Except....

Dark hatred and wickedness once again drew in from the deepest corners of every dark, unseen plane, and gathered within the Beast’s throat. He ejected it in a shuddering roar, gouging the land with yet another ugly scar—

And the earth burned.

Those dark magenta fires.

My Horse.... I must leave you.

I swung as close as I dared and leapt from my steed’s back and down onto the ground—the ground, the terrible ground.

I was small, I was alone, I was naked and vulnerable again, down on the boiling ground—running for all my little mouse-feet could give me—I had no mobility—

Almost.

The ground smoked and dripped those unholy Malice embers up into the noxified air—the fires....

I just needed to reach those.... poisonous.... stinging.... fires....

Magenta licked my legs as I pounded through the grass and into my deadly target—and leapt—

I deployed my paraglider, and the foul swelling breath of the evil flames swept me up into the airI rode the draft higher and higher—

“There!” Zelda shouted.

And I saw it.

I had been jumping from horseback to fire my arrows—the slowed time, it steadied my hands—

But now I arrowed in mid-flight, high above the ground and far away from anything—

For just one breath—

It was.... an eyeball.

Hah, and only now as I type it.... do I realize how.... Well, it shouldn’t be surprising I suppose.

It was a cacophony of eyeballs. One greater and more prominent in the midst of the rest. All erupting from beneath the thick, swirling hide, as though the neck had been sliced open lengthwise. Yellow. Bulbous. Bloodshot. Evil.

Even between the Calamity’s great flaming manes cresting high and blazing from its back, the Eyeball and its attendant cluster glowed blindingly bright with their own malevolence. So bright.... For something so evil....

But wait.... I had thought that that golden light I had seen....

....

Was Zelda in there?

“Now, Link!”

Now—

And my stamina commanded the same—I couldn’t hang on forever—and neither could she—

I let fly.

The Arrow of Light struck true.

And all the world was only a gushing and a rupturing as the Eyeball was pierced, as the Demon howled and the light exploded, filling up the sky—

The Rigours of Horsemanship

Waking of Saturday, October 13, 2018

In the Deku Tree’s Navel I cooked me up some stamina-replenishing meals. Mmf! Mighty fine eatin’. Endura Shrooms. Good stuff. I didn’t want to find myself in dire straights on any bare cliff faces again.
After that it was a warp to the Highland Stable. More often than not I always went everywhere on foot, but now.... I wanted to do that equestrian obstacle course. Because I wanted to be a better rider. Ever since I’d heard of it I’d always thought to come back and give it a try some time....
No time like the present.
And after only the minor distraction of running the very longest Korok race I think I’d ever seen.... I came back, bypassing all the mounted Bokoblins in the field, and got to the stable.
One lady inside had a sidequest available: Horseback Hoodlums.
Evidently those mounted Bokoblins were making life difficult for travelers on the road. It wasn’t that hard to believe.
So back onto the field I went. I attracted all of their attentions while wearing my Bokoblin Mask, and drew them in close until they were walking their horses in one foul, leering circle around me. Out came my sword; I charged up for a spin-attack....
And one shot of Urbosa’s Fury took them all out. Completely.
Didn’t expect it to work all the way to death in just one hit.
Oh, and Sorry, horses.
But they seemed to be all right.
Mission completed, I went back to the stable. The lady gave me a Swift Carrot for my troubles, and told me that horses love them. “Really!”
So I fed a.... gosh I didn’t have a lot of Swift Carrots.... I fed an Endura Carrot to Brown. Aww, he liked that. I’d never dropped food for my horses before. :)
And then I turned to Blynne. The man behind the obstacle course. It was twenty rupees a pop, and all I had to do was jump my mount over ten gates. And stay on my horse. Otherwise the run would be over!
Blynne’s time was a minute and fifteen seconds; he told me to try for a minute-thirty. If I could beat that he’d give me a prize....
It was.... much more difficult than it looked. I knew theoretically that a galloping horse wouldn’t be able to turn on a dime. But it was difficult to actually command my mount through its various speeds, while on the move. And while trying to HURRY.
It was good practice at least. Good, irritating, infuriating, diabolical PRACTICE....
Blynne gave me a carrot for every attempt between 1:30 and 2:00 anyway, which was nice. And you know.... I do believe.... those carrots gave extra whip-cracks to my horse! Extra speed-bursts. If only temporarily. Huh....
It took a few tries, but when I finally beat a minute-thirty, Blynne gave me the Extravagant Bridle. Oh my gosh it had a feather springing from the crown....
But OHH-HO-HO-HOHH it was only the bridle—what a delicious tease—I wanted the complete set! And for that, I would have to beat Blynne’s time of 1:15.
Oh boy....
I ran the course. And ran it. And ran it backwards. And ran it forwards. And failed. And kept missing gates. And Brown kept refusing. And sometimes, fed up with irrecoverable time loss once again I would HOP DOWN from the saddle just to get Blynne to blow the whistle so the run would be over and I could try again that much sooner, even though I KNEW, from watching that adorable show Silver Spoon on Flixnet, that that was a bad idea, and that giving up mid-run like that would discourage and emotionally scar any real horse!
But I did it anyway. GADS if you weren’t lined up PERFECTLY PERPENDICULAR to the gate on your approach....
PRACTICE. IT WAS ALL GOOD PRACTICE.
I tried and tried and TRIED and tried and tried until FINALLY.... I did it in 1:08.
Blynne was shocked! “I never thought I’d see the day...”
“Me neither,” I said.
But Blynne said he’d better live up to his word, and he gave me the Extravagant Saddle.
Ah I had them both. And they do look extravagant!
I gave Brown so many carrots then. “Good boy,” I praised him, “Good boy, Good boy, WHOOZAGOODBOYYY???
But even after all that.... the Extravagant Tack just didn’t really suit him.
I tried it on Memory, and the effect was pretty good, but.... honestly he just looked embarrassed.
Hmmmm if I had a big, pure black horse... maybe.... yeah....

Return to Hateno

Waking of Tuesday, June 5, 2018

I wanted to play, but there were people around; I could not continue on with my main quest with that kind of buzzkill risk hanging in the air.
Have I only lost faith in humanity?
Hm.
I warped from Gerudo Canyon to the Shrine of Kaam Ya’Tak. There were plenty of crawlies in there; surely one of them would drop an Ancient Core for me....
No joy.
So I warped to Hateno—I could have sworn there was somebody who sold Guardian parts SOMEWHERE near there.... someone I’d met a long time ago on the road....
No luck.
But I did buy that fancy armor set David had reminded me of in his playthrough—the Soldier’s Armor. And I showed Nebb the Moblin Club, for which viewing he gave me fifty rupees! That was nice. :) The next thing he wanted to see was a Duplex Bow....
Haeh, well.... given where I was fixing to go in the near future that didn’t seem like too tall an order.
I also cleaned up an old sidequest by stepping behind the counter and addressing the lady inkeep directly. Dunno why I hadn’t tried that before.... I asked her what she liked, and she told me “Darners!” more out of a desperation to get rid of me than out of honest consideration. I relayed this to the lovesick chump down the street who’d put me up to it, whereafter he paid me a royal rupee for a handful of my own darners. I don’t even remember which kind.... I had plenty to spare.
I also made a friend at the inn, Worten. He was just sitting out on this patio I had never explored, looking content with the world. He was a traveler like me, and he told me about a few of the places he’d visited—or at least tried to; he hadn’t actually made it to Goron City. Nor had he been able to enter Gerudo Town. But he said if I was looking for adventure, I might try Zora’s Domain or Rito Village, though both of those were quite a ways away.
The sight of him contentedly sipping from his mug as he sat there in the breezy shade was so happily striking that I took a pictograph.
It’s a good one.
I felt like I might have been overworking poor Cotera, so I warped to Mija’s fountain in Akkala to see what she could make of my new armor set. She was able to enhance each piece two levels at least—three levels for the greaves. But I needed Hinox guts for further upgrades.
Fortunately I knew where a few Hinoxes could be found.
At Digdogg Suspension Bridge I left I think it was Memory a couple of bridges out while I marched straight in and killed the Hinox myself—ON FOOT! And I didn’t even get squished. :)
But the brute didn’t drop any guts. Cheapskate.
I boarded Memory again, warped to Dueling Peaks, took out Brown, and—dear me.... as I had done long ago in the dreary, dreary rain.... rode him down the long Hateno Road.
I had not taken that road in so, so long.
Why is that?
....
I don’t know.
Maybe my very first Yiga encounters had made me shy of it.
Maybe the pressing danger of the Yiga and the madness of the Valley of Terror had made me detest Hateno, and its road.
I still have not purchased that house.
....
We’ll see.
I spoke to everyone I met along the Hateno Road, and this time.... good luck was with me—I met a man named Teli, who sold GUARDIAN PARTS. Er, Ancient Tech, I mean.
However bad luck was with me too, for he carried no cores.
Hhhhh.
I rode Brown onward into Hatenooooish lands. One more place to check.
David keeps saying They’re in shrines! The cores.
Well, I knew of one shrine with a high chance of core capacity, that’s.... an odd way to word it.... core containment, no.... breach the core, um.... mockingbirds—
—I knew of ONE shrine with a high chance of containing an Ancient Core. I had quit from it many moons before in a bid to preserve mine own life. Just quit from it—I hadn’t known how to load a previous save from within the menu.
I had Brown take me back to it this time, while I maintained a rotation of different masks; for we passed roaming Moblins in the Woods of Concussion, and Bokoblins in the heights beyond.
The great, jutting mountain-cliff beside the sea was perhaps not well suited for horses, but we picked our way as best we could between stones and along ledges (Brown at one point attempting to align to a path crossing forty feet below us), and we made fair progress until we reached the highest, broadest open shelf.
The Shrine that stood at its tip over the ocean may very well have been the most prominent Shrine on the map. You could see it for miles from many directions. Maybe that’s what had drawn me to it so long ago. I’d been out of my depth, then. But now.... I was stronger.
On the flat, open ground Brown and I broke into a welcome gallop, slipping past the strong camp of curious Bokoblins until we were safe about the reaches of the shrine.
Even so, I led Brown around to the shady back of it, out of sight of the baddies.... just in case.
And then I stepped inside the shrine—the Muwo Jeem Shrine—and faced the long-feared Modest Test of Strength that had so daunted me into retreating before.
I beat it easily this time.
But there were still no cores for me.
Hhhh.
Well, it was another Spirit Orb anyway. I was overdue to pray at a Goddess statue....
I rode Brown back down the mountain [back toward home I wrote in my original notes—To Hateno? Strange of me....]—it was a little tricky to reclaim the path we had imagined for ourselves to get up here in the first place. And when we finally reached the road, I met Teli again.
I asked him about his wares just to see.
AND HE HAD A CORE!
I BOUGHT IT. FOR A COUPLE HUNDRED RUPEES AND THEN SOME.
SWEET.
Aha! So Ancient Cores could be bought!
It was raining as I galloped back westward. But I was feeling too jubilant—this called for a change of outfit! I ripped off my Bokoblin Mask. And then.... I ripped off everything else! And rode back to Dueling Peaks in my skin.
“Well, you’re looking peppy today, stranger!” said Tasseren the stablehand when I came to board Brown again, and I laughed.

Necluda's Backyard

Waking of Saturday, June 2, 2018 ~ 3

I didn’t have enough cores on me to get the Ancient Greaves from Cherry. But with twenty-three gears.... I was able to have Cotera upgrade my Ancient Helm and Ancient Cuirass.
Funny how I could just blow them all like that. I guess when terror and difficulty no longer affect the value by creating rarity and scarcity.... Hrm, then again with a more ready supply for my demand maybe I could even make a little cash on the side....
But I never really studied economics.
I needed to get to the desert, but I only warped to Dueling Peaks. I don’t know what it is—sometimes I just like to take my journeys in smaller steps.
However this does make it easier to get distracted. After learning from Hino that there would be no blood moon tonight, I went inside the stable and spoke to a couple of guys I hadn’t interacted with in a long time, but whose facial animations I just really enjoyed: Domidak and Prissen, twins I think, brothers at least, stood in the back of the stable musing on some mysterious clue they had heard regarding the hidden treasure of one Misko.
I remembered. They would tell me the clue if I paid them a hundred rupees. When I’d talked to them the last time, which was also the first time, I blew them off right away! I didn’t have money to just throw around!
Well, now I did. I paid their silly price and they told me the clue, something about the little twin over the little river, and that the treasure was at that river’s source....?
A glance at the map told me all I needed to know: the Big Twin and Little Twin Bridges were just a stone’s cast south of the stable.
One sizeable climb up a waterfall later and I had found Misko’s treasure: a few fine ore samples, and no shortage of rupees.
Nice.
As long as I was so high up I decided to have a little look around, and kept climbing the mountain. The peak didn’t seem too far distant, and I was betting I’d find a Korok at least—which I did.
I also found that I was a little bit off my charted map.
I did not know the name of this mountain, but it certainly offered me some great views, particularly of the red plateaus beyond Faron Woods. I could even see a Blue-Maned Lynel prowling around the top of one broad butte, roaring in the rain. I Stasised him for kicks before marking his location on my map; I’d have to be careful when I ventured out that way—
AND THEN OF A SUDDEN FAROSH CAME FLOATING UP OUT OF A SMALL LAKE. I watched him arc smoothly into the air to swoop low over the watery valley between the red buttes.... and then descend into another small lake on the other side.
And then after a while, he flew the same graceful path in reverse. Heh. It made me think of something playful, jumping from puddle to puddle, only greatly slowed for its enormous scale.
And then after a time, he emerged from one of the lakes, and took to the sky.
David had never seen him do this before. But I had.
We watched him for his whole, long, slow flight, up into his vortex of cloud far away above the distant sea....
I only guessed it was above the water for the marker I stuck to his tail just as he was disappearing; it showed up on my map pretty far to the south....
David enjoyed the rare sight anyway. :)
But now.... I really did want to be on my way toward the desert.
I’d thought about seeing if I could paraglide all the way back to the stable from the heights above the waterfall, but David suggested I go straight down and keep to the cliff’s edge along the river on my way out. There wasn’t even a bank down there that I could see.... But, trusting in his tidbit, I performed one of the more thrilling HALO-jumps I’d ever done and pulled up on my paraglider just short of smattering all over the large stone at the waterfall’s base.
Link’s got good arms.
I waded downstream until I came to a little stretch of explodable wall! This I removed with a Bomb I let float down the current toward it, and when I came round to see what lay beyond the opening, I was shocked to discover.... a Shrine!
And then I remembered my Sheikah Sensor had still been tuned to detect Hearty Bass.
Heh. Silly me.
I switched my Sensor back to detecting Shrines, and then stepped inside this one, the Toto Sah Shrine. There were Apparatuses inside. Uh, Apparati?
At any rate it was a most engaging challenge. And when I was done I combed the little woods nearby to see what I had placed stamps there for—I was rather at the limit of how many stamps I could place on my map, and wanted to get rid of what I could.
I found the treasure box I had marked, but I could not make sense of why I had placed a leaf stamp nearby. I removed it anyway.
Aside from that, the only other interesting thing I found was a Stalnox lying facedown under the sunshine. I decided I didn’t want to hang around for when that thing woke up, and so made my way back to the Dueling Peaks Stable via the adjoining Valley of Terror.
I find myself no more struck with incapacitating fear in the face of Guardians.
I can handle them.
When I finally got back to the stable, and told Domidak and Prissen that I had found Misko’s treasure.... they didn’t believe me.
Eh, that was okay.
I’d gained back more rupees than I had paid them for the clue.
I rode Brown all the way to the desert with only a few more stops along the way—grabbed a Moblin Club to show Nebb in Hateno.... almost rode right by an embattled Mils and Mina.... but turned around to make sure they were all right anyway.... And they were.
It rained a lot.
Eventually and on the last legs of my battery, I made it to the Gerudo Canyon Stable, where I saved, and quit.

The Ultimate Game

Waking of Saturday, October 28, 2017 ~ 3

It was strange remembering that there were other climes I loved. There were too many mysteries on the volcano; I wasn’t ready to leave them unsolved.
But at length I paraglided down to the Foothill Stable. There was something I’d seen David do in his game.... maybe it was the only thing that could get me to finally come down, for I wanted to try it, too....
~
David had been at the Outskirt Stable. I had directed him there and told him there was a man named Trott who would buy his Raw Gourmet Meat for a hundred rupees a cut.
And as he visited around with the other people at the stable, he came to that girl by the stalls and manger, and she made the offer to style his horse’s mane and tail.
They can change the mane and tail design?” David blurted through an open grin.
“Yeah,” I said, and then added wryly, “Man, you really don’t talk to anyone, do you?”
David laughed.
I guess we’re each ahead of the other in our own ways.
I myself hadn’t even looked at the mane designs. But David did then, with.... Shooper I think was that particular horse’s name.
There were so many fun and amazing styles.... XD
~
Now at the Foothill Stable below the volcano, I took out Brown. I knew I could have just warped, but....
I like riding the roads.
I rode Brown aaaall the way to Kakariko Village, by way of the Sahasra Slope, and then aaaall the way to the Outskirt Stable.
But.... I couldn’t bring myself to do up his mane and tail. He just looks so good the way he is!
Thrice, however, I gave a long mane and tail, reminiscent of his wild upbringing.
And Memory? Mmm with his royal tack he did not look out of place wearing braids. Ehhhhhh BECAUSE.
And as long as I had a mount under me, thinking of new lands and new stables.... I decided it was time I took the road out across and beyond Digdogg Suspension Bridge.
And so Memory and I set out toward the desert canyon....
But we hadn’t been traveling for more than five or ten minutes—game minutes no less—before my swiveling view gave me a glance of Satori Mountain.
It was lit up.
The sun wasn’t even down.
I looked at the clock: the time was five pm, and the whole of the night lay ahead of me.
....
I brought Memory to a screaming halt, dashed back to the stable, and boarded him again.
I wanted to try and catch those Blupees at their meeting!

When I warped to Satori Mountain it was raining, and I shivered in the cold, but my Warm Doublet was enough for that.
I hiked up the slippery slope to the three-way crevasse at the mountain’s peak, and creeping forward to the highest split, I once again saw those little blue rabbitkabobs visiting with each other in the ghostly teal haze.
I was able to snap their pictograph this time. Blupees, my Compendium said.
Huh, from David’s mention of their name I’d thought of it spelled ‘blupies’ in my head.
Ah well.
I edged toward them, wondering how they would react—
There was something else in the clearing beyond.
Big. And glowing.
Crystal-blue like the rabbits.
Was this the Beast that Quince had told me about so long ago?
I snapped this one’s pictograph, too. And—
The Lord of the Mountain, my Compendium called it.

Huh. o.o

This was that beast.
It pawed the ground like a horse, looking about like a nervous deer, and its face.... made me think of an owl for some reason. Strange antlers sprang from its crown.
The ultimate game, I thought.
Wasn’t that what somebody had said?
Satori Mountain was the place to find game.
And this Lord of the Mountain.... wasn’t this the ultimate game?
I nocked an Ice Arrow, took aim, and let fly.
The thing reared and froze and I was paragliding in. The nearby blupees scattered and disappeared. I hit the beast again and again while the ice held, but when it finally broke free—
It vanished.
It was gone.
All the blupees were gone, too.
And the night was clear; the teal haze evaporated, and I could see the stars.

It seemed the mountain wouldn’t light up anymore, if that one got scared off.

The Last River

Waking of Thursday, April 6, 2017 ~ 3

You know those Stables really are amazing. I’d registered Thrice and boarded him there at the Woodland Stable, but when I went to take him out again, the man said, “Okay, so you want us to take Brown into our care?”
o__o They could do that?
Well.... I answered in the affirmative, and he said, “All right, wait just a moment,” the screen went black, and then I had Thrice and I guess.... they had Brown.
(Though how they fetched him all the way from Kakariko, I dunno. Are they packin’ their own Sheikah Slates....?)
I spoke to the man again, and asked to take out Brown this time.
And a similar scene ensued, and then Thrice was gone and Brown was there.
He looked at me like he knew something.... like I’d been out riding other horses....
“Oh, buddy....” I soothed him. He’s my boy; I still loved him.
But I boarded him again. Kakariko’s a nice place, but maybe it’d be nice in a proper stable too. Besides, the way I was headed, there was definitely no room for horsing around.
I warped back to the Lanayru Tower. There was just one more river to sweep—the long river that curved back east toward the Reservoir.
I clambered over the mountains along the north bank for a time, but the river was so far below me I couldn’t see it. The air seemed too fogged by distance and moisture.
Across the canyon, on the south bank, the mountains seemed almost as high—you know, maybe I shouldn’t even call it a bank; the river was flanked on both sides by sheer cliff walls in a deep ravine.
At any rate the southern cliffs seemed high, but it looked like there was a little grassy shelf a bit closer to the water that I might reach by paraglider. Maybe I’d be able to see more from there. I made sure to get plenty of altitude before I made the attempt to cross. If I came up short and ended up in the drink, I doubted I’d be able to do much besides warp back to the tower and start all over again.
But I made the crossing without a hitch and with a good two feet of landing-zone to spare. Steadying myself on the new surface, I turned around and peered back down into the ravine.
I was still quite high up.
But the river seemed to be empty.
There was nowhere to go but on toward the Reservoir. If Mei wasn’t here.... I scrambled up the cliff face, startling a few herons, and it started to rain. It was a slick run to get to the top but I made it all right—and immediately wondered if I had come up on the clifftop near some kind of settlement, for I heard music. An accordion. Was there some kind of carnival going on? I looked around wildly for some sign—
And I saw, some distance away, near a great jutting crag over the water, a figure standing on a little hump of grass, swaying gently, his arms full of something. That seemed to be the source of the music.
He wasn’t a bokoblin or any other kind of monster. I approached.
But as I came near, I saw through the haze of rain and gasped—there were feathers—blue feathers—cresting from this person’s head; the arms, the forearms were too broad, because they were wings, also blue—and a great grey parrot’s beak so prominent on the front of the face—
(Rito?” I whispered.)
I approached him slowly—it was a him, right?—and only stood beside him for a moment as he played on. I watched his colorfully striped feather-fingers as they pressed the keys.... This was so weird....
And then I engaged his attention and he startled slightly, blustering something about having thought he was all alone up here—
And then, as so many seem to have done all along my road, he sputtered out, “Wait.... that thing there on you waist!”
My Sheikah Slate.
“No, but it couldn’t be....” And then he caught himself and apologized, “I’m sorry, it’s nothing, I don’t mean to pry.”
It was my turn to say something.
And I wanted so badly to ask him, Are you a... bird?
But....
He had been kind enough to stop himself, to calm down, to try and be polite. I thought.... I would give him the same courtesy.
I only smiled and said, “No worries.”
He introduced himself as Kass—just Kass—and told me about the song he had been playing.
Oh but I sort of wished I’d asked him about his race....
But I did listen to his song. It was a lovely tune, really. Plaintive, melancholy chords; it was just really wonderful. But the lyrics were somewhat cryptic. It spoke of a beast with a crown of bone, running through the lush green, and if you mounted it on its throne, then the shrine could be seen.
The actual rhyme was smoother than that, but that’s something how it went.
Hm, I wondered what kind of “beast” could be roaming around these parts—for it was very green here. Kass and I both wondered, really. And what kind of shrine could be revealed by one mounting a beast on its throne? It all reminded me of Doctor Calip’s research, actually.... hidden shrines....
But perhaps it was a mystery for another day, for I was very near the end of combing through every single waterway of Zora’s Domain.
I bade Kass goodbye, and he played on as I trekked ahead through the rain. The southern cliff-bank gradually began to roll lower and lower toward the water level, until the land became quite flattened out in a little sunken dell and I saw something I’d completely forgotten about: a shrine I had marked!
There was a shrine, just outside the Eastern Reservoir.
There it was, at the water’s end.
And it was surrounded by lizalfos.
